"Adventures in Lesbian Philosophy" explores diverse positive understandings of "lesbian philosophy." Tangren Alexander and Joyce Trebilcot critique the dualisms and methods of traditional Euro-American philosophy and offer creative experiments in wisdom-seeking; Bat-Ami Bar On and Lorena Leigh Saxe examine areas of contested sexual behaviors, such as pornography and sadomasochism; Elizabeth Deumer and Jacquelyn Zita take up the issue of constructing the meaning of "lesbian"; and Chris Cuomo, Barbara Houston, Ruthann Robson, Sarah Lucia Hoagland, and Kathleen Martindale and Martha Saunders discuss facets of lesbian community and responsibility. Special features include: Jacquelyn Zita's portrait of Jeffner Allen's creative lesbian philosophy, Mar'a Lugones' study of Gloria Anzald a's "Borderlands/La Frontera", Naomi Scheman's reflections on Jewish lesbian writing, and Ruth Ginzberg's interpretation of Audre Lorde's conception of eros. Cornell, Drucilla
In "Beyond Accommodation", Drucilla Cornell offers a view of what feminist theory can offer contemporary women. She shows how a way to ethical feminism can be found through an alliance with deconstruction. Cornell challenges the essentialist and naturalist accounts of feminine sexuality offered by the feminist legal scholars Catharine MacKinnon and Robin West, and the French feminists Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, and Helene Cixous. She shows that these accounts actually entrap women, curtailing feminine sexual difference, giving credibility to the masculine fantasy of woman and so reinstating the gender hierarchy. To find a way past essentialism, Cornell looks to recent French philosophy and offers an original reading of Derrida, utilizing his challenge to Lacanian theory and his allegory of the feminine to allow for the affirmation of woman. Cornell's work has broad implications for feminist jurisprudence which is concerned with the harms to women that do not "exist" within the current legal system. She offers an impassioned defence of women's rights and a lucid analysis of the dilemmas of postmodern feminism. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of women's studies and continental philosophy. 239pp. N.B. Some underlining throughout. Previous owners inscription to ffep.

Previous owner's signature on ffep.Body/Politics demonstrates how many of the controversies in modern science involve or invoke the feminine body as their battleground. This groundbreaking collection addresses such scientific issues as artificial fertilization, the "crisis" in childbirth management, and the medical invention of "female" maladies and the debates surrounding them. In the process it makes an important attempt to remedy the traditional division between science and non-science by focusing on the interconnection of literary, social, and scientific discourses concerning the female body.197pp.
