A comprehensive review of behaviour therapy research and clinical applications in childhood and adolescence, this book bridges the gaps between "how-to" books and those that are largely theoretical, and between books that concentrate on childhood applications and those specializing in adolescence. Organized into three sections, "Behavior Therapy with Children and Adolescents" covers all the disorders and problems that are amenable to behavioural approaches. This book is written by international specialists on bipolar disorders. All fields of this topic are covered: the history and the evolution of concepts of bipolar disorders from ancient Greece to modern times. Original quotations of Hippocrates and Aretaeus of Cappadocia, the views of the European founders of modern psychiatry, and modern operational and biological data are considered. The role of personality, temperament, interactions, as well as of neurotransmitter, endocrinological factors and other biological parameters are extensively discussed together with genetic and epidemiological findings. Topics such as 'soft spectrum disorders', mixed states, schizoaffective bipolars, and long-term prognosis are extensively considered, and the role of modern antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers is another main point of the book. Special aspects of children, adults, and women's disorders are also discussed. The costs of treatment of bipolar disorders are described in their own chapter. In this book can be found a combination of the classical use in literature of bipolar disorders with modern data-oriented use. 483pp.N.B.Slight fade mark to base of spine and slight mark to front board.

Not terribly long ago, child psychology was dominated by grand theories of change and development. These theories were named after their originators: Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Watson, Werner and so on. These were "grand" theories because each offered a powerful interpretative framework for understanding change and development. In recent years, there have been important advances in the theoretical, methodological and applied discussions of change and development. Theory, method and application, however, remain disconnected in critical ways. In order to redress these concerns, this book was designed to cross the boundaries of discipline and theoretical orientation to address four critical issues: explanation of change and development; the nature and process of change; forms of variability in performance; and finally, the promotion of change through application. The chapters suggest that change and development in target systems from cells to selves, may not be explainable, assessable or promotable without careful reference to the context (social and otherwise) of the system, and that the process of change and development may involve variability of the system in addition to periods of stability. Together the chapters harken back to the spirit of the grand theory. Instead of proposing a grand theory, however, the chapters provide an excellent foundation for considering the importance of an individual's (or particular group's) context and variability, and discussions to facilitate thinking about what still needs to be figured out. 328pp.Some slight pencil underlining.
