Maas, Marnix C.
Molecular imaging techniques enable the visualization of biological processes in living organisms. These techniques rely on synthetic biomolecules ('tracers') that specifically target a physiological process of interest without significantly disturbing it, and that poses some property which allows them to be detected externally. If the detectable property is radioactivity, the molecules are referred to as radiotracers, and the imaging technique is referred to as nuclear imaging. The aims of the research presented in this work are to determine the spatial resolution experimentally, the energy resolution and time resolution attainable with monolithic scintillator detectors, to analyze the dependence of these detector properties on physical quantities such as the scintillator light yield, the APD gain and the noise characteristics of the front-end electronics, and to predict the performance of a small animal PET system based on these detectors. The research presented in this publication is primarily based on experimental work on prototype detector modules. Simulation studies have been carried out in parallel; these are presented elsewhere. Some of the results of these simulation studies are also used in this work. 168pp. N.B. Small crease to bottom corner of rear cover.

Bertens, Hans
At last! Everything you ever wanted to know about postmodernism but were afraid to ask. Hans Bertens' Postmodernism is the first introductory overview of postmodernism to succeed in providing a witty and accessible guide for the bemused student. In clear and straightforward but always elegant prose, Bertens sets out the interdisciplinary aspects, the critical debates and the key theorists of postmodernism. He also explains, in thoughtful and illuminating language, the relationship between postmodernism and poststructuralism, and that between modernism and postmodernism. An enjoyable and indispensible text for today's student. 284pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Slight nick to top of spine.

Poole, Michael
EX LIBRARY.One library stamp, adhesive label to base of spine and front cover. This book examines ways in which beliefs and values interact with science and science teaching. It looks at some of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural contexts within which science has developed and considers how these factors can affect the choice of scientific theory. Various historical sections provide resource material for showing pupils the role of the history of science in the study of science. Interactions between science and religious belief are also analysed to clarify the nature, strengths and limitations of science as well as its place in the total curriculum.
