Perry A Burgess was many things: Diarist, Pioneer, Prospector, Banker, Investor, Inventor - the list is long and varied. His name appears in numerous historical works published since the 1950s, yet much of his story has never been told. In 1866 he travelled to Montana with his uncles and 300 head of cattle up the Bloody Bozeman Trail during Sioux Chief Red Cloud's War. A pioneer of Colorado and one of the earliest settlers of Steamboat Springs, Burgess was a long-time friend and partner of some of the wealthiest businessmen in the nineteenth-century American West. Amongst them, his uncle Lewis Cheney, was one of the richest men in Boulder, Colorado. Together they developed the city's banking system while contributing to its cultural and social heritage. Raised Mormon, as boys they fell victim to rampant persecution, and Perry's own father died on the Mormon Trail during the exodus to Utah. For Burgess, those early years of a nomadic existence would leave their mark and nurture in him a thirst for adventure, influencing his path to the end of his life. Using Perry's diaries, family photographs, and newly discovered personal essays published in the Steamboat Pilot as their focus, Valentine and Thompson piece together the life of a remarkable man and his family, whose adventurous spirit was matched only by their willingness to risk all for the unknown. "Beyond the Land of Gold" provides an integral and heretofore missing piece of the history of the American Western Frontier and a snapshot into the life of one of its most intriguing characters. 528pp.

This title offers a detailed discussion of recent supreme court rulings that have had an impact on the contemporary debate in the US and elsewhere over physician-assisted suicide. Two rulings by the US Supreme Court have altered the contemporary debate on physician-assisted suicide: Washington versus Glucksberg (1997) and Vacco versus Quill (1997). In these cases, the Supreme Court ruled that state laws could prohibit assisted suicide and, therefore, physician-assisted suicide. These rulings mark the apex of over two decades of unprecedented litigation regarding end-of-life care and signal the beginning of a new clinical, ethical, and legal debate over the extent of an individual's rights to control the timing, manner, and means of his/her death. The debate over suicide and assisting suicide is ancient and contentious and intertwined with questions about the permissibility of voluntary active euthanasia or mercy killing. Responses to these issues can be divided into those who defend physician-assisted suicide and many of these other activities and those who object. But those who object may do so on principle grounds in that they regard these activities as wrong in all cases, or non-principled, in that they believe there are more prudent, less disruptive or more efficient policies. This book examines these responses and looks at the assumptions underlying them. Several of these authors offer the view that a culture gap exists, deeper and wider than that in the abortion debate.235pp. N.B.Slight label residue to base of d/j spine.

There is no longer any doubt that public access to computer software and information is essential for the economic development of every country on earth, rich and poor. Yet it is precisely here, in this most forward-looking of technologies, that the ancient legal battle lines of private ownership versus public interest are being drawn again, with extreme intransigence, in the field of international law pertaining to intellectual property rights. In a situation bristling with ironies, it is particularly disturbing that the rampant software piracy in developing nations undermines local development of this crucial economic sector, halting growth and actually reinforcing the global dominance of a few US companies. It is urgently necessary to create a legal framework that not only protects licensors and makes piracy unattractive, but also fosters the growth of software and information industries in every country - and particularly in those emerging countries most desperate for economic recovery. This text presents the case for such a framework. 302pp.
