The Ancient Pueblo people, also known mistakenly as the Anasazi, were a prehistoric Native American culture located around the present day 'Four Corners' areas of the Southwest United States. This area encompasses the Colorado Plateau, and extends from central New Mexico to southern Nevada, Utah and Arizona. The topography of this panoramic region varies greatly, including high plateaus, vast horizontal mesas, sleep walled canyons, and sandstone windows and bridges sculpted by water erosion. In cliff areas with harder stone, rock overhangs formed and served as building sites for adobe dwellings often accessible only by rope or rock climbing. Numerous national parks and monuments such as Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater and Chaco Canyon provide stunning scenery and a well-preserved window into the area's fascinating prehistoric past.Divided geographically, this expanded edition includes tips on visiting reservations, attending ceremonies, buying arts and crafts, and adjusting to 'Indian time'. The revised format provides easy reader access to a wealth of information, and includes dozens of new sites, selected places to stay, eat and shop, a calendar of various powwows and other tribal ceremonies, a section on language, points of interest, maps, and 16 pages of full colour photographs. This book also examines locations such as the Gila Cliff Dwellings Monument, the Taos Pueblo, and The Denver Art Museum, which houses an extensive collection of North American native art. 481pp.

The book introduces and reappraises key feminist questions concerning sex and gender, biology and the body, sexuality and motherhood. Various psychoanalytical perspectives are critically examined for the light they throw on the social and symbolic constructions of femininity. Later chapters explore theories of the subject and subjectivity, the place of language in the construction of social identities and the relation between discourse, power and knowledge. A concluding chapter focuses on the debate between feminism and post–modernism, stressing the political nature of the feminist project. 396pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. This volume features 21 essays and critical commentaries by acclaimed Canadian practitioners, educators and curators, demonstrating the range of critical thought about craft as presented in symposiums, exhibition catalogues and art journals. Over 40 full-colour photographs of works in craft media including fibre, ceramics, metal, wood and 'new materials' accompany the essays. The texts in this volume explore the conceptual, social and cultural significance of craft practice today, and describe new initiatives in conceptualising craft practices in contemporary life. Essays by prominent academics and theorists such as Sandra Alfoldy, Paul Mathieu, Arlene Oak, and Kirsty Robertson discuss craft in terms of political and social activism, gender theory, semiotics and aesthetics, analysing shifting boundaries between craft, fine art and design.Artists Mackenzie Frere, Murray Gibson and Ruth Scheuing discuss their own work, providing insight into the relationship between skill, technology, history and personal expression. The diversity of contemporary craft practice is well-represented in essays by Mireille Perron, Shannon Stratton, Glenn Allison and others, whose thoughtful analyses raise challenging questions about craft practice today. This volume substantiates academic advancement of craft curricula and provides an authoritative springboard for debate and discussion among craft practitioners, educators, curators and collectors.213pp.

The impact of Helicobacter pylori on basic science and the clinical management of patients with the complications of this infection is bewildering. The explosion of recent information both in the laboratory and at the bedside has progressed at an unprecedented rate. The objective of this text, in furthering this progress, has been to integrate this recent information and organize a series of presentations and discussions between investigators and clinicians on all aspects of H. pylori research and to review the current position and future research directions. To that end, the second meeting "Helicobacter pylori: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure" was organized in June 1996 in Ottawa, Canada, following the successful format of the first such meeting held in Amelia Island, Florida, in 1993. The meeting again focused on all timely aspects of H. pylori research. Internationally renowned basic and clinical scientists explored in depth the spectrum of H. pylori infection and the related complications of gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and lymphoma. The manuscripts in this text of the proceedings of the meeting reflect up-to-date information and state of the art approaches to research and management of H. pylori infection and should provide an invaluable reference source. 419pp.
