Commercial Law The International Academy of Estate and Trust Laws (IAETL) meets each May to spend a week of intensive engagement with issues of direct and immediate concern to estate and trusts lawyers. More than merely an assembly of commentators and interpreters, the IAETL is a prestigious body that affects real change in courts, law reform commissions, and governmental agencies. Its membership - including solicitors, barristers, notaires, judges, and scholars, all experts in trusts, estates, and inheritance law, and/or tax law - highlight the contrasts and comparisons between the pertinent laws of civil and common law jurisdictions. This volume records the May 2002 conference in Rome, which featured four distinct areas of discussion and debate: how trusts in the civilian context (specifically Italy) are subjected to taxation; the delicate balance between inter vivos and postmortem taxation; a lively debate on the nature and rationale of the inheritance tax; and how best to serve the client at the same time as meeting one's ethical obligations. As always, this outstanding annual (the fourth in this series published by Kluwer Law International) continues to offer perspectives that open on ideas in themselves, apart from the demands and responsibilities of knowing and applying the law in busy demanding professional and scholarly environments. For this reason especially it is sure to engage the deep interest of researchers, academics, practitioners, law reform bodies, governmental groups and their advisers working in this complex and varied field of law. 222pp.

Benjamin, Andrew
Best known for his work The Postmodern Condition , Jean-Francois Lyotard is one of the leading figures in contemporary French philosophy. This is the first collection of articles to offer an estimation and critique of his work. While the various chapters deal with different aspects of Lyotard's writings, they are all concerned with the question of judgement. The importance to Lyotard of judgement, and how it is to be judged, is a recurrent theme throughout the entire range of his work. It is particularly evident in his continuing engagement with the work of Kant. Lyotard's own essay, Sensus Communis , which opens this volume, investigates through Kant the presuppositions of judgement. Other essays variously consider how in his writings Lyotard has rendered problematic existing forms of aesthetic, ethical, legal and political judgement. Judging Lyotard is an important collection that will re-introduce Lyotard to English-speaking audiences. 211pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Crease to spine.

Edited By Paumgartner,G.and Beuers,U.
Bile acid research has attracted increasing attention from both basic scientists and clinical hepatologists over the last decade. Experimental studies have expanded our knowledge of the role of bile acids in liver disease, and well-designed clinical trials have documented beneficial effects of bile acid treatment for a number of hepatobiliary diseases. These proceedings of an International Falk Workshop held in Munich, January 1995, provide insights into concepts in bile acid chemistry, bile acid synthesis and metabolism, and transport of bile acids across the hepatocyte. The role of bile acids in bile formation, cholestasis and hepatotoxicity are discussed. Finally, the book addresses experimental studies and hypotheses about the putative mechanisms of action of ursodeoxycholic acid in cholestatic liver diseases, and summarizes the clinical applications of bile acid treatment on the basis of controlled clinical trials. N.B.D/J spine slightly faded with slight mark to base of d/j spine.161pp.
