Howe, Sonia E.
The mighty Russian Empire was not built in a day - from a small beginning and by a number of different processes it has grown to its present dimensions. For centuries it grew by immigration and colonisation, and it is only since the sixteenth century that expansion came by means of conquest. In the course of the ten and a half centuries of her existence, Russia's political centre has shifted three times: from Kiev to Vladimir, from Vladimir to Moscow, and from Moscow to St Petersburg. Each of these four names represents distinct phases of development and periods with very definite characteristics. This development has not been one of continuous growth: it was interrupted by a great calamity, the Mongol invasion, which darkened the thirteenth century, and from which it has taken centuries to recover. Again, the Russian nation is not a homogeneous whole, a nation of one blood; nor are her peoples all on the same level of culture. Unless these facts are grasped, and the causes underlying the complexity of Russian history come to be understood, there can be no exact comprehension or balanced judgement of her problems and difficulties, and the part she has to play among the nations. The aim in "A Thousand Years of Russian History" is to convey general impressions of the various stages passed through by Russia in the course of her evolution, and to give sketches of the lives of those of her rulers who have stamped their era with the mark of their personality. This book is a completely retyped and indexed version of the 1918 publication with the same name. 266pp.

The pictorial world of Rini Dhumal is an amalgam of myth and realism, where nostalgia and sombre tones meet to create powerful protagonists that exude raw primal energy. We see representations of memory and recollection, distilled by her imagination which emerges from deep convictions and courage. Incarnations of the quintessential Indian Woman, quiet, with aloof confidence and devoid of any fragility, dominate the earthy landscapes. Stories of displacement, chance encounters and tales of far-away lands, integrating with symbolism and perception, are all part of her oeuvre. One comes upon, at once, the universality and intimate familiarity in the fluid forms. Trained as a painter, Rini Dhumal has experimented with every conceivable medium ranging from print-making, graphics and ceramics, with fantastic results, and created a cultural vocabulary uniquely her own. Her sketchbooks, with jottings of her initial responses before they take shape as paintings or other artworks, reveal the coming together of her hand and spirit. Drawing upon a storehouse of historical details, the splendours of her childhood, and anecdotal references from various travels, she creates a vivid aesthetic in her art-making. 248pp. N.B. Timms, Edward
This is an unusual narrative in that it successfully combines subjectivity - how an English person was led by a sequence of educational developments, personal encounters and historical constraints to become the founder of the German-Jewish Centre at the University of Sussex; and objectivity - a book that introduces English and American readers to an important and evolving field of historical and cultural studies through intellectual autobiography. It documents the formative experiences of a scholar who was to become a pioneering teacher and researcher in the field of German culture and politics. The aim is to relate the shaping of self to the drift of history in a period of radical social change, extending from the refugee crisis caused by Hitler's seizure of power through the ordeals of the Second World War to post-war reconstruction, and the transformation of Britain into a modern multicultural society. The focus is on the formative role of institutions: vicarage childhood, Anglican schooling, Cambridge and other university environments - especially the new map of learning at Sussex University in the 1960s. The 'Torch' in the title alludes to the transmission of a radical intellectual tradition and to a specific commitment to the study of Die Fackel, the satirical journal edited by Karl Kraus in Vienna from 1899 to 1936. From this emerged the innovative agenda developed by the Centre for German-Jewish Studies. 315pp.

This second edition of the volume reflects the major developments that have taken place in the field of thoracic organ transplantation and replacement. With the exception of the historical chapters, every chapter has been extensively rewritten and updated and many new chapters have been added. The rapid growth of single and bilateral lung transplantation and the increasing use of left ventricular assist devices for long-term support are reflected in the text. Considerable emphasis has been placed on the current experimental and clinical developments taking place in both transplantation and mechanical replacement of organs, thus providing a preview of the clinical advances that are anticipated within the next few years. The volume contains 90 chapters that are grouped into four main areas: (i) general considerations of thoracic organ transplantation, (ii) heart transplantation, (iii) lung and heart-lung transplantation, and (iv) current and future advances in thoracic organ replacement. 824pp.
