Pieters,D
The one-job wage earner, for so many generations a bulwark of industrialized society, has all but passed away. We perceive this as contemporary reality, yet it has not been easy to cite the facts and figures necessary to build a stable foundation for the social security of tomorrow's population. Now the European Institute of Social Security, a leading multidisciplinary research group dedicated to exploring the frontiers of social security, has taken the crucial first steps with an in-depth examination of the new and atypical work relations that are emerging. The research and conclusions in this book should help policymakers to identify the areas in which existing social security systems can meaningfully accommodate the new realities of work. The volume records the proceedings of the 1999 Conference of the EISS, held at Limassol in Cyprus, to consider the relations of atypical work patterns and social protection. Among the important issues raised are: the real extent of the atypical work phenomenon; difficulties relating to the assessment of the incomes of the self-employed; social protection of farmers in Europe; and the shortcomings of existing social security systems vis-a-vis self-employment and part-time work. The analysis of trends presented in this book should be useful and informative for anyone - whether in government, business or academia - concerned with the development and future of social protection systems, not only in Europe but throughout the world. 171pp.

Edited By Stallmach,A.et al.
This work, the proceedings of Falk Symposium No. 104 - organized in collaboration with the Society of Mucosal Immunology, and held in Saarbrucken, Germany, March 5-7 1998 - is centered around the immunological mechanisms of mucosal protection and their disturbances leading to intestinal inflammation and destruction. This is a rapidly expanding field involving knowledge of basic immunology and cell biology as well as clinical observations. The conference and this book summarize recent data in this field and suggest strategies for future research and clinical applications, and should be of interest to both basic scientists and clinicians. 326pp.N.B.Slight fading to d/j spine.

Hemstad, Betty Vos
Travellers in the Boundary Waters find much to draw the eye, not least of which is a profusion of wildflowers at every turn. For the unstudied hiker, what better way to meet these plants than with a friend to guide your vision and your understanding. Betty Vos Hemstad, a summer resident off the Gunflint Trail, is just the woman for the job. Her unique collection of stunning, full-colour photographs, taken over a twenty-year span, offers views of 120 regional flowers shown throughout their life cycles, from bud to flower to seedpod. Some views take you into the heart of the plant, revealing beauty in patterns and textures not seen with the naked eye. Hemstad's practical and personable descriptions spotlight each plant's features and offer titbits about common names, and favourite locations. This beautiful guide is organised by season and then by colour, making it the perfect companion for a walk in the woods, whether on the trail or far from it. And when you have learned all Hemstad has to teach, she offers a Wildflower Challenge - twenty 'neighbours' photographed in one season or another for you to identify and capture with your own camera. Come for a walk in the woods. You will be surprised at what treasures you find. 271pp.
