The word yoga, first recorded in approximately 4000 BCE, is Sanskrit for 'union'. Typically it signifies a uniting of body, mind, and spirit leading to deepening states of happiness and freedom. This book places this ancient practice in a uniquely modern-day context. Interwoven with discussions about the eight limbs of yoga as presented in the original literature, including the core principles, Sanskrit Devanagari, mantras, poses, breath work, and meditation, are recipes, a derivation of terms, compassion ate communication guidelines, basic teaching principles, wisdom and photos of the great sages, and illuminating accounts by contemporary yogis. Throughout, readers are guided to connect to their inner selves, quiet the mind, and harness their power to achieve bliss and transcend fear, emotional turmoil, and attachment to the stresses of life. This informative reference features a highly visual format, including a first-ever historical timeline of yogic philosophies, texts, and key figures. Introduced too is yoga therapy for everything from low back or knee pain to depression. Each chapter concludes with specific invitations to delve further into the heart of yoga. Hansen, Erik W.
The Synchronic Fallacy introduces a postmodern attitude into the science of language. In accordance with its own Critico-Philological Method the essay is a constructive critique of the transcendent foundationalism of modern synchronic linguistics. Without falling into nihilistic pitfalls of the postmodern mind's antifoundationalism, the author demonstrates both how the static essentialism of modern linguistics turns out to be a transcendent, metaphysical statement of only a section of the everyday language, and how the synchronicity of modern linguistics cannot deliver on its promises to produce empirically relevant and non-shortening descriptions of the dynamic existence of the everyday language. Rehabilitating the Erkenntnisswert of the non-transcendent use of the everyday language - a project with Glossematic, 'Hermeneutical' and 'Deconstructivist' overtones - the Synchronic Fallacy presents an argument against the modern synchronization of historical linguistics and demonstrates the possibility of constructing a historical theory through the introduction of the Existential Function of the everyday language as an implementation of man's temporally structured mind, our historical sense. The essay's critical analyses of the four conceptual pillars of modern, static linguistics -system, structure, state, synchrony - evolve a determination of the temporal-dynamic nature of structure/Structuralism so that the essay's view of our tradition's purported antinomy: 'structure and history', dovetails with the advanced view of language: language change is not to be seen or observed, but comprehended.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru - the First Prime Minister of Independent India - was the embodiment of spirit and ideals of democracy, socialism, secularism, nationalism, equality and social justice. Estimating the contemporary significance and historical relevance of Nehru will always remain a challenging task for the students of social sciences. Nehru continues to remain a crucial link between the evolution of India's contemporary nationalism and the transition towards a middle-range power among the countries of the modern world. Along with other great stalwarts of freedom movement, Nehru was successful and practical in envisioning a modern India. Given the complex social, cultural, political and historical background of the Continent, this was a tremendous task. In the post-Independence scenario, Nehru was able to provide a strong foundation to the political system and clear directions to foreign and domestic policies. Despite the fast changing nature of the international system, Nehruvian perspectives are very relevant even today. This book contains 12 papers, authored by eminent scholars, which critically examine the policies pursued by Nehru in shaping modern India. 184pp.
