Deloria, Vine, Jr.
This work brings together over 25 years of the work of Vine Deloria, Jr, once dubbed "the red man's Ralph Nader," now regarded as one of the most important living Native American figures in the late 1990s. For the past 30 years, Deloria has offered contributions to understanding the complexity of religion in America. In his writings he recognizes the spiritual desperation and religious breakdown in the contemporary situation, and provides the groundwork to get people to examine what they actually believe and how they must put those beliefs into practice. The essays in this collection express Deloria's concern for the religious dimensions and implications of human existence. His writings are engaged within a theoretical system of physical, not ideological, space, and ultimately give voice to this intellectual passion by calling into question our controversial religious institutions, commitments, worldviews, freedoms and experiences. 311pp. N.B. Since the onset of globalization, protective labour legislation has been deeply eroded throughout the industrialized world. In its place we have a plethora of new employment phenomena such as flexible work time, temporary work services, decentralization of collective bargaining, private fee-charging employment placement services - a wide variety of arrangements in which employers and individual workers reach mutual agreement with little or no reliance on legal norms of government regulation. What are the dimensions and implications of this trend? And how should we go about ensuring the continuing effectiveness of labour law as an instrument of social ordering? These important questions drew a group of prominent labour law scholars from eight major developed countries to the Fifth Japan Institute of Labour (JIL) Comparative Labour Law Seminar in Tokyo in November 1998. Each participant presented papers and engaged in group discussion on the following topics: changes in labour market regulations, such as abolition of state-monopolized employment placement services and deregulation of fixed-term contracts; trends in individual labour relations, such as working hour flexibilization and expansion of derogation toward individual consent; and developments in collective labour relations, such as the movements from centralized bargaining to company- or plant-level bargaining and from trade unions to works councils. This book is the record of this seminar. Its analysis and conclusions should be useful to any practitioner, policymaker or academic interested in using available means to ensure the persistence of our commitment to high standards in labour relations. It is an integrated starting point from which to proceed toward a new labour law concept positively adapted to the socio-economic realities of the modern world. 168pp.

Slight bump to spine. This title shows you Indian birds as you may never have seen them before! In these pages, you can see the details of creatures that otherwise, one might be able to afford only a glimpse of. This book of photographic portraits presents both common and seldom seen birds of the Indian subcontinent in their habitats not just as a way to more clearly identify and hence understand them but also because it recognises the important role that environment plays in their survival. The future of birds not only rests on the preservation of their habitats, the avian population is itself an important indication of the health of the environment. Birds typically have evolved through their ability to exploit a certain ecological niche. Although the environment a particular bird prefers over another is seldom a defining characteristic, such classification can help in identifying birds in the field and provide valuable data towards understanding their behaviour. 115pp.

Our understanding of inflammation has increased rapidly in recent years, due in large part to the impact of molecular biology and gene identification and cloning. This book brings together ideas from a number of different biochemical disciplines which are frequently not integrated. The first chapter gives a visual overview of the subject; the remaining chapters are organized into three themes: the affector molecules, the regulatory components and the processes of inflammation itself. This book is aimed at the busy physician or pathologist who wants to be up-to-date with recent developments in immunology as they affect the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions. 313pp.N.B.Spine slightly faded.
