Thomas, Andrew Peyton
In this unauthorised biography, the most authoritative ever written about the controversial Supreme Court Justice, Andrew Peyton Thomas (no relation) explores Clarence Thomas' remarkable rise from a childhood of poverty in segregated Georgia to the nation's highest court. In his attempt to understand what drives the elusive and sometimes enigmatic Justice, the author located and conducted the first-ever interview with Clarence Thomas' father, as well as interviews with his mother, sister, and other relatives and friends. He follows Thomas up from Jim Crow and traces the important decisions of his youth -- why he chose not to become a Catholic priest, why he engaged in radical protests as a college student. We see Clarence Thomas in the full as a young lawyer in Missouri and then as a rising star in Washington. This book peels away all the cliches about its subject in giving us a vivid and balanced account of a remarkable American life. 661pp.

Hambright, K. D.; Ragep, F. J.; Ginat, Joseph
"Water in the Middle East" presents historical and cross-cultural perspectives on water and conflict, prospects for future cooperation in the water arena among Middle Eastern countries, the political economy of water and technical solutions to water shortages in the Jordan Valley, and the relationships among water, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Through case studies and essays, natural and social scientific water experts from Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and the United States examine: The role of water in Middle East conflicts and the possibility of regional solutions to water scarcity requiring cooperation among states; Long-term prospects of various aquifers and other fresh-water sources, including desalination; current and future environmental deterioration of water resources; Breakthroughs and developments increasing regional agricultural productivity, depending less on high-quality waters while turning to lower quality resources, such as recycled and brackish waters; alternatives to current water-usage patterns, particularly with regard to agriculture and the possibility of redirecting water to tourism and other economic sectors. While this book highlights the complexities pertaining to regional water scarcity and inequitable distribution, the contributors offer no definitive conclusions or facile solutions; yet there is a broad consensus that regional solutions to maximize water resources must be pursued even as desalination becomes more viable both from technical/economic standpoints. The continuing deterioration of existing water supplies in terms of quantity and quality mandate that any solution must be achieved within a political/social framework of peace, enlightened economic policies, and the application of technical solutions that take due account of environmental concerns.249pp.

Edited By Balling,Morten Etc.
The papers in this volume were presented in Budapest at the 20th Colloquium of the Societe Universitaire Europeenne de Recherches Financieres (SUERF), arranged in association with the Robert Triffin-Szirak Foundation. Each paper deals with a different aspect of the characteristics of and trends in corporate governance. The three main topics are: corporate governance of financial institutions; corporate governance as exerted by financial institutions; financial instutions as participants in the transfer of corporate governance. The structure of financial markets and institutions has a significant impact on the ways in which the power to manage corporate resources is allocated. The relative roles of different types of owners and the legal framework within which they operate are currently in a state of flux throughout Europe. Financial integration in the European Union, the transition to open market economies in Central and Eastern Europe and privatization, have a profound effect on the behaviour and influence of different enterprises. This collection of papers demonstrates the range of aspects of corporate governance in a world characterized by rapid technological, political and institutional change which is currently concerning researchers and practitioners. The authors come from a wide number of countries and disciplines, and include people from banks and corporations, public officials and academics, providing different perspectives on corporate governance, financial markets and global convergence in eastern and western Europe. Their contributions should be of considerable interest to academics in the fields of finance and banking, monetary economics and macro-economics, and also to professionals in banks, securities houses, corporate treasuries, pension funds, consultancies, law firms, central banks and regulatory bodies. Fraser, Jim
Mississippi is well known for its rich soil and plantation mansions, but the bluffs and prairies of its eastern boundary are often overlooked. Here, Jim Fraiser takes a deeper look at those historical gems of eastern Mississippi and its Coast. From Pascagoula to Tupelo, and Jackson too, the beauty of Mississippi's historic homes shines through Rick Guy's stunning photography. With each house pictured, readers learn interesting tidbits about the history of the home, the surrounding area, and the owners (or former owners). For those who love architecture, this book will be a wonderful addition to their collections. Several styles are covered, from the elegant Greek Revival of Waverly in West Point to the Colonial Revival style of Ballymere in Pass Christian. Spanning nearly one hundred years, from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, this book has everything. The fantastic images of authentic era refurbishing, interior settings, and antebellum designs portray the influence of the different cultures that collided in the South. From the first page to the last, excellent photography and enthusiastic writing combine to make this a smart selection.96pp.
