Edited By Lembcke,B.;Kruis,W. And Sartor,R.B.
This book, composed of the proceedings of Falk Symposium 98 held in Titisee, Germany, 25-26 May 1997, provides an analysis of the field of extra-intestinal manifestations of IBD, which gastroenterologists frequently see, but which require close contact with other subspecialities. The basic understanding of the pathophysiology of extraintestinal manifestations requires upgrading, based on recent advances in animal models or clinical investigation. While the intestinal manifestations of IBD are increasingly well characterized, the extraintestinal facets of IBD currently are best understood on the basis of sophisticated clinical description, thorough investigation and an excellent clinical standing. Modern techniques in immunology, microbiology, pathobiochemistry and new horizons in imaging methods as well as in surgery, however, have substantially contributed to this knowledge, and the book should therefore foster a mutual exchange between the basic or theoretical disciplines and clinicians, including a variety of different subspecialities in order to stimulate clinical and theoretical research topics. Accordingly, the book embraces both aspects: current knowledge on extraintestinal manifestations of IBD, as well as a definition of objectives and a path for future steps in research. 388pp.N.B.Fading to d/j spine.

Zargani, Aldo
In an extraordinary literary debut, Aldo Zargani reconstructs the lost world of his Jewish childhood during the perilous years 1938-45 when he and his family fled from Fascists and Nazis in northern Italy. His haunting memoir acquires a cinematic intensity as he crosscuts from the blood-red stone spires of Basel, where his father failed to find refuge for his family in 1939, to fiery scenes of the Allied bombing of Turin in 1942, to the freezing winter of 1943-44, which Zargani and his brother spent hidden in a Catholic boarding school deep in the countryside.326pp.

Editors Munn,R.E.,La Riviere,J.W.M.
This text gives an overview of ongoing relevant research in global environmental policy-making, focusing on the two major international programmes - the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and the World Climate Research Programme. These are described in terms understandable to the interested lay reader. The results of the latest review of the Intrgovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are included. This is followed by an analysis of the response process that is in progress with respect to governments - singly and multilaterally - by business and industry and by public interest groups. This process is leading to interactive structures, assessment procedures and legislation, nationally and internationally. Business and industry are changing from mere watchfulness to recognition of new opportunities for products and processes. Six interviews with prominent figures from business and government circles in the Netherlands provide a vivid illustration of the questions at issue. 225pp.N.B.Base of spine slightly faded.

Ebbatson, R
In the 1990s, it was the French theorists such as Derrida, Lacan and Foucault who, with their stress on linguistic play and undecidability, took Victorian Studies by storm; now, it seems, it is the Germans who are coming. In Roger Ebbatson's new book, Marx, Simmel, Benjamin and, above all, Heidegger are unleashed on a range of Victorian texts - some unsuspecting, some all too suspecting. The results are alarming: Ebbatson begins with Tennyson overshadowed by empire and homosocial tensions and ends with Conan Doyle writing about a bicycle belonging to a character called Heidegger. In between, he makes bone-shaking progress over a Victorian terrain marked out by Thomas Hardy, Richard Jefferies, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Robert Louis Stevenson; along the way, Ebbatson considers shipwrecks, money, nature, the South Seas Mission, and 'final solutions'. Tennyson, we discover, was afraid of his own shadow, Hopkins's greatest poem was created by erratic compasses, Hardy wrote like Kafka, Stevenson was drawn to murderous missionaries, and Conan Doyle applauded the concentration camp. Ebbatson shows us that what the Germans bring to our understanding of the nineteenth century is a terrible awareness of the darkest moments of the darkest moments of the twentieth century. 172pp. N.B. Slight fading to rear board. Inside of D/J stained.
