Townes, Emilie M.
This book offers an important contribution to the recovery and articulation of African-American womanist experience. Ida Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) was an activist, social reformer, and churchwoman. Womanist Justice, Womanist Hope recovers her life and historical context and examines the extent to which her perspective can be a resource for a contemporary womanist Christian social ethic. Beginning with a brief biographical sketch of Wells-Barnett, Emilie Townes examines the religious and social world in which she worked as well as her many speeches and publciations. Townes focuses especially on Wells-Barnett's participation in the anti-lynching campaigns of the late nineteenth century. She argues that Wells-Barnett's life and work can provide important lessons in leadership and social activism for contemporary Black churchwomen. nature of leadership for Black women. 228pp. N.B. The International Labour Law Reports is a series of annual publications of labour law judgements by the highest courts in a number of jurisdictions. ILLR is intended primarily for the use of judges, labour law practitioners, industrial relations specialists and students who need or desire ready access to authoritative information of a comparative nature on problems arising in the field of labour law and industrial relations. Each judgement reprinted in ILLR is accompanied by headnotes and in practically all cases by an annotation which sets forth, among other things, the legal issues involved, the basic facts of the case (if not included in the judgement itself), the relevant statutory provisions and judicial precendents, the labour law and industrial relations context in which the case arose and the significance of the judgement in the development of the law. The ILLR provide the reader with factual information that aims not to be coloured by the personal views of the annotators. As a rule, judgements are printed in extenso; editorial discretion has been relied upon to delete or to summarize portions of judgements that are purely technical or only of marginal interest. Volume 17 covers the period 1 October 1996 to 30 September 1997. 500pp.

Lang, Michael H.
A number of cases regarding the fundamental freedoms in respect to direct taxation are pending at the European Court of Justice in 2003. This book discusses the national background of the pending cases and a possible infringement of a fundamental freedom by observing the ECJ's testing scheme on the basis of the request for a preliminary ruling and, if available - of the opinion of the advocate general. The pending cases are all presented by highly recognized experts in the field of European tax law of the country that made the request for the preliminary ruling. This guarantees that the discussion of obstacles is embedded in the particular tax system. 208pp.

Tolstoy, Leo; Wenzer, Kenneth C.
Scholars have tended to regard Tolstoy as a disciple of no one except a secularised Jesus, but Henry George was a strong influence; for example, Tolstoy devoted a large portion of his later life to the promulgation of the `single tax' (a main tenet of George's philosophy) as a viable solution to suffering from falsity, greed, poverty, and bankrupt ideologies. The work examined in this volume is a testimony to both Tolstoy and George; it bears witness to a practical, economic and non-violent approach to the organisation of society, free from the domination of individuals, institutions, and mobs.KENNETH C. WENZERis an independent scholar specialising in the study of Henry George, Tolstoy, and Russian history. VOLUME TWO ONLY. NEW STILL IN SHRINK WRAP.
