Norton,Joseph J. Editor
The fourth volume of this Yearbook provides essays, articles, comments and analyses of developments throughout the previous year. The new essay section of this volume is contributed by Shangquan Gao, Senior Professor in the State Council of PRC who examines the negative influence of the Asian financial crisis on China. Professor Eva Holz, Deputy Governor at Uruguayan Central Bank, Dr Michael Gruson, Senior Banking Partner at Shearman & Sterling, and Professor Geoffrey Wood of City University are some of the contributors of major articles in the edition. One of the salient features of the volume is that it focuses on new developments in post-financial crisis restructuring measures taken by various countries, such as PRC, Brazil and Japan. Complementary to this issue, globalization, international financial stability, and international capital flows are also discussed comprehensively. The period covered by the volume has witnessed major financial and economic law reform projects in various areas of the world. The volume offers comprehensive analysis of these reforms including the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 in the US and its influence on the global financial sector, progress in collateral law reform in Central and Eastern Europe, the development of securities law and the Internet in the UK, commercialization of China's land use right, reform of Hong Kong property tax system, and legal changes in Japanese asset securitisation and investment. Some issues are re-explored in this volume from new and different perspectives. The discussion of the integration of insurance and other financial services in Taiwan, of the Lender of Last Resort, of the solutions to the non-performing loan problems in China, of capital adequacy under the Basle new capital adequacy framework, and sovereign debt restructuring in Latin America will offer the readers new insights into these issues. This volume should appeal to anyone with an interest in international financial and economic law throughout the world. Its broad geographic scope and the expertise of the contributors offer an indispensable chance for the readers to keep abreast with developments in a rapidly changing area of the law.553pp.

Modernity and its Futures is a major introductory textbook which examines the forces reshaping modern industrial societies and the new patterns, structures and relationships that are emerging in the contemporary world. The key debates about these changes are introduced and critically discussed; they include the transformation of Eastern Europe, the collapse of the USSR, globalisation, environmental challenges, post industrialism, cultural change and post–modernism. The book also looks back to the formation of modern societies, and of social science, to explore the character of 'modernity' and the relationship between 'early–modern' and 'post–modern' societies, and assess whether the paradigms and theories used to analyse 'modern' societies are adequate for social formations today. 391pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Corners of covers slightly rubbed.

Woolnough, Brian E.
EX LIBRARY.One library stamp, adhesive label to base of spine.Science teaching in schools is often criticized, especially by older students, for being too prescribed, too impersonal, too lacking in opportunity for personal judgement and creativity. Science has become reduced to a series of small, apparently trivial activities and pieces of knowledge, unrelated to the world in which the students are growing up, and inhibiting to their developing personalities and aspirations. And yet, despite the pressures of national curriculum and examination syllabuses, science in schools can be, and often is, much more exciting and stimulating than that. This book celebrates such science teaching, and the qualities of the teachers who produce it, and argues that doing science should be a holistic not a reductionist activity, involving the affective as well as the cognitive aspects of a student's life. We should be concerned not only with what students know and can do, but also with whether they want to do it. Furthermore, Brian Woolnough argues that the best form of effective science teaching is through student research projects, in which students take a problem of personal concern to themselves and tackle it, worry at it, persevere in it and, meeting its challenges, produce their own solution. Such involvement in genuine scientific activity is, it is argued, not only possible in schools but essential if school science can do justice to our students and to the scientific enterprise itself.
