On Tuesday morning, a piece was torn out of our world. A patch of blue sky that should not have been there opened up in the New York skyline. Our city was changed forever. Our country was changed forever. Our world was changed forever. So wrote Jonathan Schell in the first issue of The Nation magazine following September 11, 2001. In A Just Response, some of the most respected figures on the progressive left analyze the causes and consequences of this new American wound in a series of thoughtful, informed, and provocative essays. Selected from The Nation and other sources, these articles counter the bombast and jingoism of so much of the media coverage since September 11while providing informed analysis, provocative commentary, and reasoned debates. The writers in these pages speak out against "Fascism with an Islamic face," jingoism, and the undermining of civil rights, address the confusion between dissent and treason, and articulate a vision of a just response to terrorism. Others reflect on an interview with Osama bin Laden, the concept of "Blowback"modern technological society turned unwittingly against itselfand the American right wing's exploitation of a national emergency to further its political agenda. Also included are dispatches from other countries around the world, brief background histories of bin Laden's origins, the roots of fundamentalism, asymmetrical warfare, and a heated exchange between Noam Chomsky and Christopher Hitchens. 349pp. N.B. In situ hybridization has developed as a means of localizing specific DNA and RNA sequences within tissues. The great strength of this approach is the ability to relate the distribution of specific nucleic acids with cell structures and the protein products of the target gene by means of immunohistochemistry. Complementary DNA, RNA or oligo-nucleotide probes, suitably labelled, are hybridized to specific DNA or RNA targets within tissues. The spatial information thus obtained has contributed greatly to our understanding of such diverse areas of research as gene mapping, viral infection, cytogenetics, protein synthesis, prenatal diagnosis and tissue grafting. This book is not intended as another recipe book, although it does describe theoretical and practical aspects of the technology. Rather, the authors critically describe the contribution made by in situ hybridization to specific areas of medical research. 116pp.Slight fade mark to base of spine.

This book is written by international specialists on bipolar disorders. All fields of this topic are covered: the history and the evolution of concepts of bipolar disorders from ancient Greece to modern times. Original quotations of Hippocrates and Aretaeus of Cappadocia, the views of the European founders of modern psychiatry, and modern operational and biological data are considered. The role of personality, temperament, interactions, as well as of neurotransmitter, endocrinological factors and other biological parameters are extensively discussed together with genetic and epidemiological findings. Topics such as 'soft spectrum disorders', mixed states, schizoaffective bipolars, and long-term prognosis are extensively considered, and the role of modern antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers is another main point of the book. Special aspects of children, adults, and women's disorders are also discussed. The costs of treatment of bipolar disorders are described in their own chapter. In this book can be found a combination of the classical use in literature of bipolar disorders with modern data-oriented use. 483pp.N.B.Slight fade mark to base of spine and slight mark to front board.
