Reagan, Charles E.
In this informed biography of Ricoeur, student, colleague, and confidant Charles E. Reagan provides an accessible look at both the philosophy of this thinker and the pivotal experiences that influenced his development. From Ricoeur's devout Protestant upbringing to his tutelage under Roland Dalbiez, from his critical interactions with a host of scholarly luminaries to his notable engagements with French politics, the defining moments of Ricoeur's life are detailed and tied to his formal thought. 151pp. N.B. Flowers, Arthur;Curtis, Anthony;Neiman, Leroy
This coffee-table art book is one-of-a-kind. From hundreds of portrayals created over centuries by celebrated artists, such as Cezanne, Picasso, Munch, Leger, de la Tour, Remington, and Neiman, the best 120 were chosen to appear in this provocative visual documentation of the evolution of gambling. Much more than a compilation of subject-specific art, this book offers a scholarly look at the history of gaming. Each image is accompanied by a facing page of text, providing readers with a thumbnail sketch of the artist, then zeroing in on the image itself. The renderings, as seen through the artist's eye and preserved on canvas or in stone, serve as a form of 'photographic' chronicling that weaves a history of gambling through the ages - for the benefit of art lovers and gambling enthusiasts alike. 231pp. N.B. Birnbaum, Daniel. Sharp, Amanda. & Heiser, Jorg.
Doug Aitken is a young Californian video and installation artist who has risen to international prominence with works such as his multi-screen video environment "electric earth". Aitken's subjects explore the deserted spaces of Bollywood film sets in India; Jonestown, Guyana, the site of the notorious mass suicide of religious cultists; and a remote diamond-mining region of Namibia, closed to outsiders since 1908. His environments are vivid, elusive and dreamlike. This monograph explores the artist and his work. It features a discussion of Aitken's working methods by Amanda Sharp; an examination of Aitken's art within the context of contemporary philosophy and the work of other artists who have explored expanded notions of time and space; a study by Jorg Heiser of Aitken's "i am in you", a five-screen work centring on the imaginative experiences of a young girl; "Artist's Choice", for which the artist has selected a short story, "Funes the Memorious", by Jorge Luis Borges, whose description of altered realities through the distortions of mirrors and memory echoes the artist's own interests; and "Artist's Writings" - Doug Aitken's writings include his retelling of an unusual story he once heard from strangers he met in the desert and which served as the basis for a subsequent work.158pp.N.B.Head oif d/j slightly rubbed.
