In the 4th Framework of European research programme, telecommunications sector (ACTS) has played an important role. Within the framework under ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services), Domain 5 is dedicated to "Intelligence in Services and Networks (IS&N)" area and has projects that deal with service architecture, service platforms, service creation, communications management, electronic brokerage, mobility, security, agent technology and applications. Many of the pfojects cover more than one of these aspects. This text addresses the issues in particular order and provides the results of IS&N projects addressing those issues in a synthesized manner, so that the reader can get insights into the European projects contribution towards the telecommunications software industry. Thus it provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of IS&N issues. 579pp.

Weiss, Friedl; Wooldridge, Frank
Arguably, the most important element in any system of economic integration is the freedom of movement of persons. In this, as in other initiatives, the European Community has taken the lead, and emerging economic unions and common markets elsewhere in the world take full cognizance of the EC's successes and failures as this fundamental right has developed under European law. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of this body of law, encompassing doctrinal basis, institutional framework, legal compliance, judicial development, and derogation on such grounds as security and health. The authors comment extensively on matters including visas, free movement of workers, freedom of establishment for companies, posted workers, harmonization of professional qualifications, European citizenship, freedom to provide and receive services, agreements between the European Community and other states concerning free movement, the rights of third country nationals (especially their position under the EURODAC regulation), and the rights of families and individuals to housing and education. In addition to providing analysis of the relevant provisions of the European Community Treaty as amended by subsequent treaties including the Treaties of Amsterdam and Nice, the book takes considerable account of all relevant secondary legislation and sometimes soft law, for example draft treaties, resolutions, and draft legislation. The authors also consider what obstacles remain to this freedom, and what future developments might take place in this area of Community law.

Although there have been considerable advances in the management of renal failure by dialysis and transplantation, there has been relatively little progress in its prevention. The term glomerulonephritis covers a wide range of conditions with different immunological, histological and clinical features. This volume therefore starts with reviews of the immunology and pathology of different types of glomerulonephritis. This is followed by detailed consideration of the treatment of the commoner primary and secondary forms of the disease. There are separate chapters on special circumstances, such as glomerulonephritis in pregnancy or following renal transplantation. In each chapter, attempts are made to review the evidence for the effectiveness of treatment, based on controlled trials, immunopathological principles and the authors' considerable experience. Although some aspects of the treatment of glomerulonephritis can be found in the standard texts on renal disease, this volume provides an up-to-date, thoroughly referenced, and practical guide to management. As such, it should be of value to nephrologists and general physicians, including those in training, and to postgraduate students of nephrology. 227pp.N.B.Slight marking to base of spine.
