What are the most popular names of the Ambo people in Namibia? Why do so many Ambos have Finnish first names? What do the African names of these people mean? Why is the namesake so important in Ambo culture? How did the long independence struggle affect personal naming, and what are the latest name-giving trends in Namibia? This study analyses the changes in the personal naming system of the Ambo people in Namibia over the last 120 years, starting from the year 1883 when the first Ambos received biblical and European names at baptism. The central factors in this process were the German and South African colonisation and European missionary work on the one hand, and the rise of African nationalism on the other hand. Eventually, this clash between African and European naming practices led to a new and dynamic naming system which includes elements of both African and European origin. 373pp.

Information technology is continuing to transform global communications and the world economy with innovative products and services. In this dynamic environment, events tend to be market-driven and it may be difficult for the regulators to keep up. At the same time, there is a need for public authorities to promote effective competition within a clear, coherent, and predictable framework. This reference work summarizes the major rules and policies for information technology at European level. It describes the institutional framework and general policies for the "information society", examines the detailed rules for external trade, competition and intellectual property, and discusses the Internet and electronic commerce. It provides an excellent overview of the subject as well as a good starting point for additional research on particular issues. This work should be of interest to practising lawyers, corporate counsel, business executives, consultants, academics, and government or trade association officials. Base spine slightly bumped.104pp.

Arguing that the beginnings of the social sciences extend much further back than is generally realized, this study traces the methodological foundations, research techniques, and basic concepts of the social sciences from their earliest origins to the beginning of this century. It provides empirical refutation of recent radical political, feminist, and environmentalist critiques that assert that the social sciences inevitably support the power relations of the status quo, are antithetical to the interests of women, and are inherently linked to the domination and destruction of nature. Covering the important eras in the development of the social sciences, this work deals with the early Greeks, the emergence of the scientific method in the 17th century (especially Bacon, Descartes, and Locke), the French Enlightenment (especially Voltaire, Diderot, Condorcet, and Germaine de Stael), and British moral philosophy (especially Hume, Smith, and Catharine Macauley). From the 19th century it includes figures such as Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Quetelet, Harriet Martineau, Florence Nightingale, J.S. Mill, Harriet Taylor Mill, and Beatrice Webb. 397pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Corners slightly bumped.
