Bean, Susan S.
Built around mariners' journals of their pioneering voyages, "Yankee India" charts the early development of commercial and cultural relations between the United States and India in the Age of Sail. The end of colonial rule in 1783 had given American merchants and ship owners the freedom to trade in Asia. Voyages from ports along the eastern seaboard were the first American links to the distant and exotic culture of India. Mariners' journals and letters speak of encounters with vastly different ways of life that sometimes challenged and sometimes reinforced ideas about decorum, religion, and morality and that influenced attitudes toward imperialism, legitimate rule, and free trade. Material embodiments of India at the time - prints, paintings, and figurines depicting Indian scenes and people; "hubble-bubbles", "idols", fans and other souvenirs; as well as goods like bandannas, palampores (bed covers), and shawls - augment and illustrate the story. Previously untapped archives and collections of the Peabody Essex Museum, whose founders were captains and supercargoes in the Asia trade, provide the principal resources. These first encounters between the United States and India in the Age of Sail laid the foundation for American views of India and contributed to the development of American and Indian national and cultural sensibilities. "Yankee India" brings this important but little known episode to a wide range of readers interested in the histories of the United States and India, and in the impacts of intercultural encounters. 288pp.

This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of non-judicial dispute settlement in international financial transactions. Whereas arbitration and non-judicial dispute settlement mechanisms are of growing importance in international economic transactions, their present and future role in financial transactions is not yet fully explored. This publication aims to fill this gap in the literature and includes analyses of bank remedies, direct negotiation and mediation in financial and business conflicts, debt renegotiations, restructuring of syndicated loans, arbitration in project financing, and the roles of the ICC, NAFTA and OAS. Some of the expert papers focus in particular on the role of arbitration and dispute resolution in Latin America, Greater China and Russia. The text is based on the edited and revised papers of an international conference - part of a global series of conferences held in 1999 on the "New International Financial Architecture" - organized by the Law Centre of European and International Cooperation (R.I.Z., Cologne), the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (London), the Asian Institute of International Financial Law (Hong Kong), and the SMU Institute of International Banking and Finance (Dallas). 307pp.

Edited By Rachmilewitz,D.
This book, the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Falk Symposium 101) held in Tel-Aviv, Israel, on September 22-24, 1997, is devoted to recent progress in diagnosing and treating inflammatory bowel diseases. The achievements of the years from 1948 to 1998, medical, surgical and in the basic sciences, are summarized in detail. Controversies with respect of the aetio-pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases are discussed together, with pending clinical controversies, such as the best way to monitor treatment, early versus late surgery, and post-operative maintenance and surveillance. A special section is devoted to an analysis of which of the available drugs is the drug of choice. Finally, a large section deals with surgical controversies, such as laparoscopic surgery in inflammatory bowel diseases, one- versus two-stage ileo-anal anastomosis and treatment of fistula in Crohn's disease. The last section outlines needs, both in the medical sciences and in the clinic. 239pp.Fading to d/j spine.
