There is no longer any doubt that public access to computer software and information is essential for the economic development of every country on earth, rich and poor. Yet it is precisely here, in this most forward-looking of technologies, that the ancient legal battle lines of private ownership versus public interest are being drawn again, with extreme intransigence, in the field of international law pertaining to intellectual property rights. In a situation bristling with ironies, it is particularly disturbing that the rampant software piracy in developing nations undermines local development of this crucial economic sector, halting growth and actually reinforcing the global dominance of a few US companies. It is urgently necessary to create a legal framework that not only protects licensors and makes piracy unattractive, but also fosters the growth of software and information industries in every country - and particularly in those emerging countries most desperate for economic recovery. This text presents the case for such a framework. 302pp.

Neary, John
This book examines literary texts from various genres - prose fiction, plays, film - in order to explore the way dark and enlightening spiritual journeys are presented in literature. Combining literary criticism with Jungian approaches, the analysis focuses on well known religious, spiritual and psychological writings, with special reference to the work of James Hillman. Stanley Kubrick's film "Eyes Wide Shut" and Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic tale "Young Goodman Brown", which present uncannily similar stories, exemplify the book's theme: both are examples of a 'dark-side' narrative. In each case a limited, somewhat naive protagonist goes out, at night, into the darkness (the streets of New York in the case of Kubrick's protagonist, the New England forest in the case of Hawthorne's) and discovers things about himself and the world that he previously was unaware of. It is a disturbing discovery of deep imperfection and apparent perversity - an encounter with what Jungian psychology dubs 'the shadow'. But it is also an experience of what Christian theologian Paul Tillich calls 'depth', which he considers an experience of groundless mystery that is no less than an encounter with whatever people refer to when using the word 'God'. That a discovery of apparent perversity may be an illuminating experience of the divine is a paradox that lies at the heart of the mystery of each individual's 'shadow', no longer to be considered as a bundle of repressed negativity but as a harbinger of growth and soul, a doorway to spiritual illumination. In "Shadows and Illuminations", this paradox of dark-side narratives - that shadow is illuminative - is explored in relation to a variety of classic and contemporary literary works. 163pp. N.B. Rose, Gene
While nearly all of America's major rivers have been compromised, few have been so misused as the San Joaquin. In its comparatively brief history, it has been dammed, diverted, and depleted beyond comprehension. Here, in colourful and informative prose, veteran author Gene Rose identifies the forces and figures who have shaped, altered, and corrupted this once mighty waterway which some now view as 'a river betrayed'. 150pp.

Complications due to bleeding and thrombosis are associated with many of the major clinical problems faced in obstetric and gynaecological practice. This book provides a comprehensive review of these problems by an international panel of authors active in clinical practice, teaching and research in their topics. The book deals with the physiology of haemostasis and blood rheology in general, the changes seen in normal pregnancy and the development of the coagulation system in the foetus. Obstetric and gynaecological haemorrhage is reviewed both from the viewpoint of the clinical obstetrician and gynaecologist, and the haematologist. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy is dealt with over several chapters. These highlight the problems peculiar to the pregnant situation and their management, such as the effects of anticoagulants on the fetus and the often neglected area of the longterm outcome for women suffering from venous thromboembolism in association with pregnancy. Congenital and acquired disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis in relation to gynaecological practice, the pregnant situation, and the foetus and neonate, including prenatal diagnosis, are examined, providing information and experience of the management of these problems. Also covered is the common problem of menorrhagia and the relationship between the oral contraception pill and hormone replacement therapy and thrombosis. 573pp.
