Chronic inflammatory, malignant and metabolic diseases of the liver, pancreas and bile system account for substantial morbidity and mortality. Thus, new strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat such diseases are urgently needed. This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium 150, "Disease Progression and Disease Prevention in the Gastrointestinal Tract", held in Berlin, Germany, on 3-4 October, 2005, and focusses on the biliary system, pancreas and liver. Pathogenic processes are described as well as primary and secondary prevention and treatment of disease. Scientific and clinical experts offer a broad understanding and pave the ground for extensive interdisciplinary discussions. In this sense, the symposium generated new aspects contributing to "translation research" developing also - at least in some aspects - new perspectives on the various different pathogenic mechanisms in gastrointestinal organs. The present book summarizes the state of the art in these different disease entities, as presented at the meeting.269pp.

The right to health care is changing over time and its content varies from country to country. Considering the right to health care on a singular plane fails to take account of the many differing applicable health care perspectives and their ramifications. Instead, the right to health care must be considered as a multidimensional concept. An expert meeting hosted by the Department of Health Policy and Management, Erasmus University, convened in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in April of 1998 addressed the meaning and consequences of the right to health care in changing health care systems. Commissioned for this expert meeting, the papers published in this text address many differing perspectives on the right to health care, including international and national views, the role of various legal principles and the function of courts, and the organizational dimension. Awareness of these multiple perspectives and their ramifications is important in moving forward amidst the changing climate of health care rights. For example, reviewing knowledge and exchanging experiences from other countries helps enhance understanding of the meaning behind health care principles and provides an avenue for shared advice amongst those countries with commonalties in their systems. By offering this diverse range of viewpoints and coverage, the book provides a resource for anyone interested in health care rights.187pp.

Davalos, Karen Mary
In this authoritative study, Davalos challenges the sometimes hidden, sometimes blatant assumptions that underlie the practice of creating museum exhibits, and asks what happens when people of Mexican (American) descent put themselves in command of the collection, display, and interpretation of their cultural products. Davalos pays particular attention to museum and cultural centres in major Mexican diaspora communities, including the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago and Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco. Throughout she critically examines Chicano, Mexican, Mestizo, and Mexican American subjectivities as they are expressed in curatorial decisions and practices, in educational materials and catalogue texts, and in the performances and other public events that accompany museum exhibits. That practice -- what Davalos calls 'exhibiting mestizaje' -- produces complex representations of Mexican (Americans). Davalos's analysis shows clearly that the value of mestizaje and diaspora lies in their ability to create a cultural poetics from fluidity and conflict. 264pp.
