Heath, Byron
This is the story of the evolution of the sailing ships that gradually linked Australia to Europe. The book explains how the navigational problems of Australia's huge coastline were conquered by ships that were at the cutting-edge of technology for their time. The story covers the period from antiquity until the arrival of Britain's First Fleet at Botany Bay in January 1788 and highlights the rapid improvement of ship construction after the European Renaissance began the trend to reasoned experiment that replaced ignorance and dogma and made possible long return voyages to the ends of the earth. The author has been able to draw upon his experience in measurement technology to show that the improvements in ship design after the Middle Ages arose principally from the invention of increasingly precise measuring instruments such as the accurate clock and the lenses used in microscopes and telescopes. The ship's wheel, copper hull sheathing, antiscorbutic diet to counter scurvy and the sextant were all invented not long before the British colonised Australia. The book contains numerous maps and illustrations that highlight the maritime technology inherited by the British from the ships of Scandinavia, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and France who pioneered the ocean pathway to Australia. 192pp.

Graddol, David and Boyd-Barrett, Oliver
This volume is one of the four readers compiled as part of the course Language and Literacy (Code E825), which is one module of the (UK) Open University MA in Education programme. The collection of papers in this volume is the outcome of a collaboration between two editors: the first a linguist and the second a researcher in media studies. The papers reflect the growing convergence of the two disciplines in their treatment of the text. Analyses of film and television have for some time drawn on linguistics theory - particularly the structuralist model of language provided by Saussure. More recently, linguists have themselves developed and turned their attention to the kinds of text which pervade everyday life, and that has at last generated more principled accounts of the interaction between words and image, and more generally of the interplay and tension between verbal and non-verbal modes of meaning. This anthology is thus concerned with the complex ways in which texts communicate: at how the verbal and visual element of texts can be theorized within a linguistic framework; and at postmodern approaches which strive to "decanter" the text itself and explore the historical social contexts of their production and consumption. The collection should be of wide interest to students and researchers in linguistics, media studies, and communication. 282pp.

Ziffer, Alfred
Text in German & English. Ernst Leitz was taking the prototype for the legendary Leica camera to be tested in North America when 'Haus Friedwart' in his hometown of Wetzlar was begun. The architect, Bruno Paul (1874-1968) was a sought-after designer of challenging interior designs and architect of grand upper-middle class houses and public buildings. By means of wood panelling, fittings and the design of ceilings, he gives every room a special character. Details such as door handles, radiator screens and lamps remain today, as does all the furniture designed for the house. This building is therefore a unique example of Bruno Paul's special art, which, through zigzag lines, twin arches and star forms, represents an early example of Art Deco.
