Ardis, Lawrence P. (editor)
This book presents tables that provide historical data, including service dates, party affiliation, and other information, for 15 House and Senate party leadership posts. Although party divisions appeared almost from the First Congress, the formally structures party leadership organisations now taken for granted are a relatively modern development. Constitutionally-specified leaders, namely the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate, can be identified since the first Congress. Other leadership posts, however, were not officially recognised until about the middle of the 19th century, and some are 20th century creations. The Senate was slower than the House to develop a separate, identifiable party leadership. Records of party conferences in the 19th century Senate are not available. Memoirs and other secondary sources reveal the identities of party conference or caucus chairmen for some, but not all, Congresses after about 1850; but these posts carried very little authority. It was not uncommon for Senators to publicly declare that within the Senate parties, there was no single leader. Rather, through the turn of the 20th century, individuals who led the Senate achieved their position through recognised personal attributes, including persuasion and oratorical skills, rather than election or appointment to official leadership posts. The development of Senate party floor leaders was, like in the House, one of slow evolution, linked for the most part to the post of conference chairman. Not until 1945 did Senate Republicans specify that the conference chairmanship and floor leader posts must be held by separate Senators. Among Senate Democrats, the floor leader is also chairman of the conference. A special section presents biographical sketches of each of the leaders. 171pp.

This book doesn't just list 100 rare or unusual plants. It is a fun and light-hearted look at the 100 plants -- bulbs, climbers, ornamental grasses, perennials, some biennials and even a few annuals -- which the author has found more appealing, more interesting and more beautiful than others.208pp.

A guide to using more than flowers to make a beautiful garden, this book discusses the small trees and shrubs that make up much of the structure for contemporary gardens. Trees and shrubs are arranged according to months of interest with many of the trees' characteristics described through multiple seasons - flowers in spring, foliage in summer, foliage and fruit in fall, and bark in winter. Gardeners can find the information they need quickly, and each of the 272 entries include beautiful photographs showing the plant characteristics in a natural setting. Specific gardening information is listed for each tree - the plant type, zone grown in, fruit or flower, habit or foliage, height, width, spacing, light, soil, care, uses in the garden, problems, insider's tips, and complimentary plants. Deciduous, evergreen, and broadleaf evergreen trees and shrubs are all profiled.337pp.

Stockton, Kathryn Bond
This book encompasses aspects of feminist theory, post-structuralist materialisms, Victorian essays, and two prominent nineteenth-century women's novels (Villette and Middlemarch) to explore desire between women as a form of what the author calls 'spiritual materialism'. By engaging specific texts by Irigary, Bronte, and Eliot, the author explores a surprising homology that makes materialism a hidden God. That is to say, post-structuralist feminists are caught on the horns of Victorians' obsession: how to chart channels between realms commonly considered approachable and those considered finally inaccessible. 273pp. N.B. Birnbaum, Daniel. Sharp, Amanda. & Heiser, Jorg.
Doug Aitken is a young Californian video and installation artist who has risen to international prominence with works such as his multi-screen video environment "electric earth". Aitken's subjects explore the deserted spaces of Bollywood film sets in India; Jonestown, Guyana, the site of the notorious mass suicide of religious cultists; and a remote diamond-mining region of Namibia, closed to outsiders since 1908. His environments are vivid, elusive and dreamlike. This monograph explores the artist and his work. It features a discussion of Aitken's working methods by Amanda Sharp; an examination of Aitken's art within the context of contemporary philosophy and the work of other artists who have explored expanded notions of time and space; a study by Jorg Heiser of Aitken's "i am in you", a five-screen work centring on the imaginative experiences of a young girl; "Artist's Choice", for which the artist has selected a short story, "Funes the Memorious", by Jorge Luis Borges, whose description of altered realities through the distortions of mirrors and memory echoes the artist's own interests; and "Artist's Writings" - Doug Aitken's writings include his retelling of an unusual story he once heard from strangers he met in the desert and which served as the basis for a subsequent work.158pp.N.B.Head oif d/j slightly rubbed.
