Windsor, Philip; Edited By Berdal, Mats
Philip Windsor (1935-2000) is widely acknowledged to have been among the brightest and most penetrating of thinkers in International Relations. This book brings together some of his most exciting and stimulating essays, covering many of the classic and most enduring issues in International Relations: the causes of wars; intervention and the use of force; the regulation of conflict; human rights and the tensions between order and justice. Windor's philosophical bias, together with his elegant prose and sheer breadth of knowledge, gave an underlying coherence and unity to all his writings. The essays include brilliant essays on East-West relations during the Cold War, arms control, Clausewitz's contribution to strategic thought, Henry Kissinger's scholarly contribution and the place of human rights and cultural dialogue in international politics. 246pp.

Masellis,M. And Gunn,S.W.A.
The health professions are continually developing effective techniques of burns and mass casualty management. In parallel, fire prevention and fire-fighting techniques have developed considerably in most communities. It is therefore surprising that, while aiming at the same objective, the two sectors have rarely come together. The Mediterranean Burns Club is a professional organization that brings together persons concerned with burns therapy and with fire safety in all forms. Identified by the United Nations as a premier scientific body in its field within the programme of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, it initiated the first international gathering of specialists in burns as a surgical, clinical problem, and of counterparts dealing with fires as a social, disaster problem. This novel approach and symbiosis proved timely and successful. This, the resulting book, reflects the commitment of all concerned to the reduction of fire disasters and the improvement of burns therapy.339pp.

Edited Bybernitz,Ulf and Nergelius,Joakim
This text is based on a selection of papers presented at the Conference in Malm, Sweden, which was organized by the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies in co-operation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Lund. The purpose of the conference was to analyze general principles and their scope in the EU legal order with special emphasis on their role in the creation of a jus commune europaeum. The impact of the general principles of Community Law at the national level was analyzed and also how these principles have been transformed into the national legal systems. Also discussed was the creative process behind the shaping and further development of the general principles and their application. Due to their complex nature, the general principles offer a more or less unlimited field for theoretical legal studies. At the same time, the general principles play a very important role in legal practice, not least when used as instruments for the protection of individuals and firms against too far-reaching measures taken by the European institutions or Member States. European Monographs no.25.

Herman, John
Sir Eric Phipps was British Ambassador in Berlin (1933-37) and at Paris (1937-39) - two key ambassadorships which spanned the crucial period between Hitler's advent to power and the outbreak of the Second World War. This book explains the striking contrast between his reputation as a staunch anti-Nazi and an 'anti-appeaser' in Berlin, and as a 'defeatist-appeaser' in Paris. 276pp. N.B.
