Edited By Duchmann,R Etc
This book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium 133 on Mechanisms of Intestinal Inflammation: Implications for Therapeutic Intervention in IBD', held in Berlin, Germany, on 10-11 June 2003, summarizes present knowledge in the area of unspecific and specific immune reactions in the gut, recording the gaps in our knowledge and, in particular, presenting the possibilities of targeted intervention. The link to inflammatory bowel diseases - Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis - is always in focus. Chapters by an international panel of basic scientists, clinical researchers and clinicians also record the problems which can originate through today's possible modulation of the immune reaction, setting the basis for review of clinical problems. This book is valuable readings for all scientists and physicians, who, from different perspectives, have an interest in research on IBD and in the clinical management of these diseases. 220pp

Cooper, Jim
Log homes have come a long way from the wilderness cabins of colonial pioneers. With the advent of new technology and the ever-increasing skill sets of contractors, log homes have become one of the most luxurious kinds of homes built in America. With multi-gabled rooflines and glass-fronted living areas, these sophisticated homes have captured the interest of architects and homeowners alike. In this updated and revised third edition, Jim Cooper includes new information on 'green' construction techniques and materials. Whether planning a new log home or simply interested in learning more about them, readers will find all of their questions answered here. 288pp. N.B. Corners slightly bumped.

Badcock, Christopher
This book is an account of the nature and significance of human sociobiology. Assuming no prior knowledge, it explains the basic concepts of the subject in simple, accessible language, and illustrates them by numerous examples from the everyday experience of past and present times. Christopher Badcock argues that, properly understood, modern Darwinian insights into reproductive success, natural selection and social behaviour are wholly consistent with the idea and existence of free will, self-consciousness and sacrifice, and with individual and group morality. He reveals the surprising extent to which evolutionary theory can explain aspects not only of male-female relations and of the interaction between parents and children, but characteristically female behaviour in relation to fertility, abortion, concealed ovulation and menstrual synchronation. He also presents a challenging new theory of male homosexuality in the context of the wider question of masculinity and sexual conflict. Sociobiology is a controversial field and its practitioners have been accused of reducing human beings to packages of programmed genes. Christopher Badcocok shows by contrast, that it has much to offer students of human behaviour at every stage of cultural and individual development. 303pp. N.B. Some HIGHLIGHTING and annotation throughout. Reading crease to spine. Slant to book.
