Aberg, Martin
At the start of the twentieth century, political parties had the potential to focus grass-roots interest in the development of modern, democratic nation-states. Yet all the new parties were met with suspicion across Europe, particularly among liberals. These popular misgivings and the way the liberals nevertheless managed to build a party are the subject of this book. In this book, historian Martin Aberg argues that because of liberalism's individualistic traits, which left liberals less susceptible to political organisation on a mass basis, party members had to come to an uneasy compromise between individual and collective action. Aberg compares two regions - Varmland in Sweden and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany - which historically both had a significant liberal presence. Despite its organisational shortcomings, liberalism in Sweden paved the way for the peaceful democratisation of the state. In Germany, however, liberalism turned conservative, foreshadowing the extreme nationalism and Nazism that was to come. Aberg argues that the peculiarities of organisational behaviour go some way to explain the very different outcomes. 246pp.

Orton, Peter; Fry, John
Health systems throughout the world are undergoing tremendous change and this is particularly true in the United Kingdom, where the reforms over the last ten years have had a major impact on all aspects of how health care is planned, delivered and managed. This work selects, interprets and puts into context the vast amount of information available on health-care systems both in the UK and elsewhere in the world. Key points include the illustration of trends over time, comparisons with other countries and systems and the coverage of all aspects of health care, both public and private. The result is a single source of facts, figures and, most importantly, interpretation of the vast amount of scattered information available on the UK health care system. The book should be of interest to all those involved in the provision of health services: patients, doctors, nurses, managers and policy makers. 178pp.Slightly marked at base of spine.

Edited By Bindels,J.G.;Goedhart,A.C. And Visser,H.K.A.
This text comprises the reports of the proceedings of a symposium held on 29 November-2 December, 1995. It aims at both giving a convenient introduction in some of the most topical issues of paediatric nutrition to newcomers in the field, as well as reporting the current developments to respective experts. Major emphasis is given to infant nutrition and body composition, nutrition and integrity of the gut system, and maternal nutrition and its effects on the fetus and newborn. In addition to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids which are addressed extensively, attention is also paid to other topical nutrients like cholesterol, iron and indispensable amino acids. Edited discussions follow each of the five sessions recorded in this volume. 400pp.Very slight fade mark to base of spine.
