Cunningham, Rosemary
Those who think arts and culture in British Columbia is a recent development might be surprised to learn that opera has been flourishing in the province for well over a hundred years. The first full performance in Victoria took place in 1877 and in Vancouver in 1891. This first-ever history of opera in BC celebrates important milestones for BC's two major companies: Vancouver Opera's 50th anniversary, with the 30th anniversary of Pacific Opera Victoria following in 2010. It also marks the recent upsurge in the popularity of the venerable art form, with new opera groups and simul-cast venues proliferating across the province. Illustrated with over 100 exquisite photographs and rare archival images, "Bravo!" traces the history of opera in the province from its colourful origins in touring companies, to the determined efforts of BC's opera pioneers who laid the foundations for two of Canada's most renowned opera companies, culminating with in-depth reporting on recent developments at Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria. Special features include behind-the-scenes accounts of contemporary productions, full listings of Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria and Modern Baroque Opera productions and detailed information on BC opera singers, composers and opera training in the province. 208pp.

Yeatman, Anna
Previous owner's signature on ffep.In "Postmodern Revisionings of the Political", Anna Yeatman examines the implications of postmodernist theory for the institutions of liberal and social democracy. In this study, she rethinks the role of modern emancipatory values, such as equality, in the context of postmodern politics of difference. Yeatman discusses the relation of a politics of difference to existing traditions of modern citizenship. While she affirms modern democratic achievements, she argues that our concept of democracy must be informed by postmodern critical theory. She explores the relationship between these two sets of concepts in terms of the politics of knowledge, the university and in the modern body politic.141pp.

Cygan, Adam Jan
The acquisition of increased powers by the European Parliament has raised the spectre of a "competition legislature" for national parliaments, and even the threat of a democratic deficit at the national level. At this moment, the author of this book suggests, it is vital to recognize and reinforce the ways in which the institutions of the European Union are politically accountable to member States. In this analysis of the participation by domestic legislatures in policy-making and legislative processes at the European level, Adam Jan Cygan focuses on the evolving means by which the legislatures of Germany and the United Kingdom are responding to the increased competence of the European Union. This technique allows him to highlight such factors as: the procedures of European scrutiny committees in the United Kingdom Houses of Parliament and the German Bundestag; the accountability of national ministers for decisions taken in the European Council of Ministers; the role of sub-national governments, as revealed in both the formal federal system of Germany and the devolved administrations of the United Kingdom, in European affairs; and the continuing impact of Treaty provisions and informal co-operation between member States. This text demonstrates that, contrary to some prevailing beliefs, national parliaments are not necessarily destined to become mere administrative institutions. In fact, the national initiatives and procedures analyzed here reveal a firm commitment to compel the attention of the European Commission and the European Parliament toward national and even sub-national accountability. However, as in all political matters, vigilance and tenacity are necessary to prevent erosion of democracy and national legislative competence. This book aims to enable all interested parties legislators, policy-makers, government officials at all levels, academics, and others to proceed knowledgeably and confidently in this important area. 249pp.
