Harper, J. Russell
Since its first appearance in 1967, Russell Harper's classic study of Canadian painting has been recognized as the outstanding authority on the subject. This edition provides a comprehensive survey, generously illustrated, of three centuries of Canadian painting from its beginnings in the seventeenth century. Through a lively combination of entertaining anecdotes, descriptions of the cultural background, biographical accounts, and critical judgement, the reader comes to know intimately the artists, their paintings, and their environments. They allow the reader to see representative works from all periods, and provide a visual record of the cultural and social history of Canada. 463pp. N.B. Corners of covers creased. Risjord, Norman K.
In "Shining Big Sea Water", historian Norman K Risjord offers a grand tour of Lake Superior's remarkable history, taking readers through the centuries and into the lives of those who have travelled the lake and inhabited its shores. Through lively, informative chapters, Risjord begins with the lake's cataclysmic geological birth, then explores the lives of native peoples along the shore before European contact and during the fur trade, showing how Superior functioned as an unusual "blue water highway" for Indians, early explorers, industries, and settlers. He outlines the development of such cities as Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan; Ashland, Wisconsin; and Two Harbors, Minnesota, and tells the fascinating histories of life-saving lighthouses and famous shipwrecks. In the final chapter, Risjord looks to the future, offering a clear-eyed account of the environmental and economic challenges faced by America's largest freshwater lake. Interspersed throughout the book are handy tips for travelers, highlighting historically significant sites that illustrate key pieces of Lake Superior's natural and human history, including national lakeshores, in the United States and provincial parks in Canada.178pp.

Englert, Klaus
Spanish museum architecture has experienced a marked upturn since the 1990s, fired in part by the worldwide acclaim for Frank O. Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Spanish architects have designed unique museums that have changed the look of whole towns, from Rafael Moneo's Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Merida to the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y Leon in Leon in Castille, built by the Madrid architects Mansilla + Tunon. Moneo, who recently completed the annexe for the Museo del Prado in Madrid, may still be the leading figure in Spanish architecture, but architects like Mansilla and Tunon (who trained under Moneo), are now attracting attention internationally as well as in Spain, as are even younger talents who have just left architecture school. Spanish architects use a wide variety of formal languages, yet there are some characteristics that apply to them all: they are uninterested in Postmodernist games; the modern reinterpretation of regional building traditions is prominent in their practice; they are sensitive to particular features of the environment and topography. Kenneth Frampton observed in this context that Spanish architecture essentially runs counter to the globalisation tendencies that are increasingly reducing architectural form to a comfortable (yet formulaic) aesthetic product. This book, which makes an excellent museum guide, shows that this tendency is particularly conspicuous in the new museums, and confirms the world-class nature of new Spanish architecture. Klaus Englert studied philosophy and German. He was academic adviser to the Zollverein development company in Essen. He has worked for several years as free-lance culture correspondent and architecture critic for the Suddeutsche Zeitung, the Neue Zurcher Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. 199pp.
