With a patio, porch, or windowsill, any budding gardener can bring the outdoors in using this guide to growing in containers. Arrangements begin simply, with one type of plant in a decorative container. The projects move on to combinations of two plants, then on to more complex pots involving three or more plants. Design principles including color, texture, height, and depth are considered, and ideas for themed containers are included for holidays and other festive occasions. Species range from the tried-and-true garden varieties, such as impatiens and petunias, to newer plants on the market, such as a striking red ornamental millet. Some of the arrangements are even meant to go from container to garden plot. The planter plans include detailed photographs, diagrams, and instructions on getting the very best results from container gardening, for lasting natural beauty in any space. 275pp. N.B. Bottom corners of boards slightly bumped. Head of spine slightly torn

Edited By Lodberg, Peter
The relationship between religion, politics, and law represents, one of the most important issues in contemporary discussions on the world's future. While global changes and political conflicts in many parts of the world demand serious reflection about the role of religion in politics and in public discourse, the study of religion in post-secular societies calls for reflections about the normative role of religion in politics and law. Through the contributions of scholars in the disciplines of theology, the science of religion, and political science, this volume presents an absorbing analysis of democracy, politics, and law, drawing upon the works of John Rawls, Jfirgen Haberman, Max Horkheimer, Michel Foucault and Theodor W Adorno. Such topics as Islam and democracy are addressed, in addition to the report by the European Council on Fatwa and Research and specific issues in which churches have been involved in political conflicts. Case studies on communism, nazism, and apartheid, for example, are also presented, and finally the question is addressed of how inter-religious dialogue can function in secular societies in relation to the Danish cartoon crisis. 186pp.

The hepatocyte adapts its metabolic and excretory function to changes in nutrient supply, xenobiotics, cytokines and hormones, which provides a basis for the role of the liver in the maintenance of the body's homeostasis. Such adaptations of hepatocellular function to the environment require not only structures for recognition of signal molecules and for the sensing of environmental alterations, but also machineries which transfer this information to intracellular effector sites. Considerable progress has been made during recent years with respect to the understanding of membrane-associated receptor systems and the molecular mechanisms by which signals are transduced from these receptors to the effector sites inside the cell, i.e. the nucleus and other organelles, the cytoskeleton and various enzymes. A complex signal transduction network involving a co-ordinated action of a variety of protein kinase and phosphatase cascades has been identified. Such signalling events are not only important for the understanding of the physiological regulation of liver cell function, but also provide new pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects. This text, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop on "Signalling in the Liver" (Part IV of the Liver Week Freiburg 1997) held in Freiburg, Germany, October 6, brings together an international forum of experts in both basic science and clinical applications.Slight fading to base of D/J spine.224PP
