Jayne, Allen
In this compelling study of the moral principles that most influenced the thinking of Abraham Lincoln, historian Allen Jayne argues persuasively that Lincoln regarded the Declaration of Independence, above all other documents, as the most important embodiment of American principles. This "American manifesto", as Jayne calls it, with its eloquent expression of the ideals of individual liberty and government created to protect and preserve that liberty, was the script that Lincoln followed in his struggle to preserve the Union and extend individual liberties to African Americans. Moreover, Jayne demonstrates that Lincoln's philosophy was rooted, not in a Bible-based evangelical Christian perspective, but in the European Enlightenment and deism, which so profoundly influenced the thinking of Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers. Jayne begins with a chapter devoted to the influence of deism on Jefferson's formulation of the Declaration of Independence. Next, he discusses Lincoln's adoption of the deistic perspective and the crucial role that the Declaration played in his thoughts and actions. He also considers Lincoln's moral sense, based on deism's tolerance of different belief systems and universal moral idealism. Finally, he describes Lincoln's role as chief advocate for the Declaration's principles and how the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address reflect this underlying philosophy. This insightful look into the thinking of one of our nation's greatest presidents during a time of crisis is highly relevant in today's climate of religious extremism and debates over the balance between individual liberty and national security. 392pp.

Greer (editor); Forbes (editor); Turpie, A. G. (editor)
Complications due to bleeding and thrombosis are associated with many of the major clinical problems faced in obstetric and gynaecological practice. This book provides a comprehensive review of these problems by an international panel of authors active in clinical practice, teaching and research in their topics. The book deals with the physiology of haemostasis and blood rheology in general, the changes seen in normal pregnancy and the development of the coagulation system in the foetus. Obstetric and gynaecological haemorrhage is reviewed both from the viewpoint of the clinical obstetrician and gynaecologist, and the haematologist. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy is dealt with over several chapters. These highlight the problems peculiar to the pregnant situation and their management, such as the effects of anticoagulants on the fetus and the often neglected area of the longterm outcome for women suffering from venous thromboembolism in association with pregnancy. Congenital and acquired disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis in relation to gynaecological practice, the pregnant situation, and the foetus and neonate, including prenatal diagnosis, are examined, providing information and experience of the management of these problems. Also covered is the common problem of menorrhagia and the relationship between the oral contraception pill and hormone replacement therapy and thrombosis. 573pp.

Nicholson, Linda J.; Seidman, Steven
Social Postmodernism defends a postmodern perspective anchored in the politics of the new social movements. The volume preserves the focus on the politics of the body, race, gender, and sexuality as elaborated in postmodern approaches. But these essays push postmodern analysis in a particular direction: toward a social postmodernism which integrates the micro-social concerns of the new social movements with an institutional and cultural analysis in the service of a transformative political vision. 397pp. N.B.
