Edited By Harris, Jonathan M; Goodwin, Neva R.
Presenting new and innovative perspectives on macroeconomics at the national and international level, the editors bring together contributions on a wide range of topics including: social, institutional and environmental perspectives; current issues of globalization; transitional economies; inequity; unemployment; national and international debt; and the relationship of macroeconomic policies to the environment. The contributors draw on expertise in a variety of areas to provide insight into debates on macroeconomic policy in the US and Europe, as well as in developing and transitional economies. Themes include: disequilibrium in the macroeconomy - analysis of the roots of instability and crisis in national and global systems; the evolution of macroeconomic institutions to stabilize and guide economic growth; the paradoxes of globalization, the dangers of unrestricted financial flows and the impacts of globalization on national institutional coherence; macro and institutional strategies for the transitional economies of Russia and Eastern Europe; distributional and equity issues, including employment, housing and homelessness; the impact of macroeconomic policy and debt on the environment; and long-term growth and its relationship to well-being and environmental sustainability. 259pp. n.B. Green, Karen
Previous owner's signature on ffep. This important and timely book challenges the direction taken by much recent work in the field of feminist studies. It mounts a powerful defence of humanism - a tradition of which many contemporary feminists have been sharply critical. Many feminists have viewed 'reason' and 'rationality' with deep suspicion. They have argued that reason was constructed by male philosophers in a way that excluded feminine traits: the man of reason was a masculine fiction. But this rejection of humanism assumes that there is only one tradition of humanism and only one conception of the rational individual. By carefully re-examining the texts of a feminist humanist tradition, Karen Green uncovers a different conception of the rational individual - a 'female version of rationality'. She captures the specificity of women's thought through a careful examination of their writings and their differences from the work of their male contemporaries. On this basis, Green argues that we need to reconceptualize both rationality and liberalism. Maintaining the ideal of rationality is quite compatible with understanding ourselves as embodied, emotional creatures whose sense of self is made up of a mixture of reason and feeling. Feminist humanism can provide a firm basis for political action and a compelling defence of equal political representation for women and men.211pp.

Samarpan, Amano
Slight bump to spine. This title shows you Indian birds as you may never have seen them before! In these pages, you can see the details of creatures that otherwise, one might be able to afford only a glimpse of. This book of photographic portraits presents both common and seldom seen birds of the Indian subcontinent in their habitats not just as a way to more clearly identify and hence understand them but also because it recognises the important role that environment plays in their survival. The future of birds not only rests on the preservation of their habitats, the avian population is itself an important indication of the health of the environment. Birds typically have evolved through their ability to exploit a certain ecological niche. Although the environment a particular bird prefers over another is seldom a defining characteristic, such classification can help in identifying birds in the field and provide valuable data towards understanding their behaviour. 115pp.
