Davalos, Karen Mary
In this authoritative study, Davalos challenges the sometimes hidden, sometimes blatant assumptions that underlie the practice of creating museum exhibits, and asks what happens when people of Mexican (American) descent put themselves in command of the collection, display, and interpretation of their cultural products. Davalos pays particular attention to museum and cultural centres in major Mexican diaspora communities, including the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago and Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco. Throughout she critically examines Chicano, Mexican, Mestizo, and Mexican American subjectivities as they are expressed in curatorial decisions and practices, in educational materials and catalogue texts, and in the performances and other public events that accompany museum exhibits. That practice -- what Davalos calls 'exhibiting mestizaje' -- produces complex representations of Mexican (Americans). Davalos's analysis shows clearly that the value of mestizaje and diaspora lies in their ability to create a cultural poetics from fluidity and conflict. 264pp.

Krainz, Thomas A.
Examines welfare, or 'relief' as it was termed, at the beginning of the twentieth century utilising Colorado county records to assess how rural areas balanced demands on their limited resources. Historians have heretofore focused on welfare in urban settings but Thomas Krainz provides the first account of public assistance in a rural area where locals had to prioritise recurring social issues (disabilities, widows and orphans, and so forth). Universal assistance was offered to the blind as well as injured or unemployed males, but aid for unwed mothers and indigent children often faltered. Contemporary historians who have discussed early twentieth-century relief developments have failed to explain transformations in the systems that occurred and what elements and events shaped policies during this period. Instead, their focus has mainly been to link Progressive Era programs with the later New Deal programs of the 1930s. Krainz examines each side of the welfare issue, the providers and the receivers, with a look at how both evolved over time to accommodate more demands and fewer resources. 325pp.

Tsohos, Prof. Dr G. And Oppliger, Dr M
Construction chemicals and in particular concrete admixtures, as a major part, represent a complex and multidisciplinary field of technologies. It is therefore not a surprise that there are difficulties to gain an understanding of such complex areas which include chemistry, physics, material sciences, engineering and construction techniques. This book is an attempt to bridge over the different views and languages of chemists, engineers, contractors, concrete technologists as well as environmental specialist. This is a very ambitious target. The lack of systematic teaching at universities was the motivation for the authors to create a handbook which should help students, chemists and engineers as well as any other interested parties to understand admixtures in their variety, nature, mode of action and its performances. The objective was not to deal with scientific details or report on the latest research but even more to give an overview and to show performance characteristics and correlations. This book should also help to promote admixtures as a very useful tool to save resources (eg: water, energy, by improving performances, quality and service life of concrete constructions).142pp.
