Hindle Hazen, Margaret & M.Hazen, Robert
To examine the cultural context of fire in "combustible America" gathered more than 100 illustrations, most never before published, together with anecdotes and information from hundreds of original sources, including newspapers, diaries, company records, popular fiction, art and music. The result is an encyclopaedic history that ranges from stories of the tragic 'great fires' of the century to fire imagery in folktales and popular literature. Dealing more with technology than with fire in nature, the book provides a vast amount of information on fire manipulation and prevention in everyday life, discussing the people who worked with fire and against it. 281pp.

Wertz, Dorothy C.; Fletcher, John C.
Dorothy Wertz and John Fletcher pioneered the first international study of ethical and social issues in genetics in 18 nations. This book reports and discusses their second and more representative study in 36 nations. The survey focused on actual situations that occur in the practice of medical genetics, presented as case vignettes that can also be used in teaching and policy discussion. Among the issues discussed are privacy, prenatal diagnosis, patient autonomy, directiveness in counseling, sex selection, forensic DNA banking, "genetic discrimination," and "eugenics". This is Dorothy Wertz's final book, as she died in April, 2003. It is a one of a kind cross-cultural study of complex ethical issues in the uses of genetic information. No one else has attempted to look at the international aspects of medical genetics on such a broad scale. The results provide a resource for discussion both within and among nations. Much bioethical and policy discussion now occurs in an information vacuum. The survey showed that what people would do, and their reasons for doing it, differed considerably from what ethicists think they "should" do. Many will be surprised at the results, especially in nations where bioethical discussion is just beginning. "Genetics and Ethics in Global Perspective" is of interest to medical geneticists, genetic counselors, social scientists and anthropologists who study cross-cultural issues, bioethicists and bioethics centers and health policy makers. 474pp.

Lee, Yong-Shik
Among restrictions on imports, safeguard measures are particularly controversial in that they are invoked in the absence of any unfair trade practice. Safeguards interfere substantially with the normal stream of trade, and their improper application undermines the objectives of the WTO. Recent WTO cases have brought the attention of trade lawyers to the absence of comprehensive materials on this complex subject, and highlighted the need for a reliable guide to the WTO rules on safeguards. Dr. Y.S. Lee, perhaps the world's foremost authority on safeguard measures, has provided such a guide, here updated in its second edition. Readers may expect from this book comprehensive coverage on safeguards to date with legal analysis of the important issues in the interpretation and application of the current rules on safeguards. The author also proposes modifications to enhance and clarify the discipline of safeguards. The crucial issues raised include the following: economic and political justifications of safeguards; applicability of GATT Article XIX; interpretation and application of the Agreement on Safeguards, including nondiscriminatory application of safeguards and justification of safeguards-in-response; transitional product-specific safeguard measures against China; and, emergency safeguards to trade in services. The focus of the book is on the WTO Agreement on Safeguards, as interpreted by WTO Panel and Appellate Body reports in key cases, including Korea' Dairy Products, Argentina's Footwear, United States' Wheat Glutten, United States' Lamb Meat, Chile's Price Band System, United States' Line Pipe and United States' Steel Products. Dr. Lee summarizes the various key findings and provides lucid and well-balanced analysis of these reports. "Safeguard Measures in World Trade" comes at a time when safeguard measures continue to mount in various parts of the world and a possible domino effect can destabilize the international trading system. It will be of inestimable value to government officials, trade lawyers, international business people, and academics in trade law and related fields. 265pp.
