Smith, Patrick A.
Jim Harrison's fiction is diverse in its genres, protagonists, and settings: from novel to novella - from comically masculine rogue to the psychically scarred female - from wilderness to city. This study examines the metaphors Harrison uses to offer critical entrance into his fiction - food, place, ecological concerns, journey, "soul history," and region. Harrison's fiction contains the underlying currents of alienation and lost identity, and he uses these currents imbedded in modern life to explore the viability of the mythic quest and the American Dream. This study, the first full length critical analysis of Harrison's work, illuminates Harrison's diversity and range, placing him in the top echelon of contemporary American authors. Through personal association and a passionate attachment to Harrison's work, Patrick Smith uses close readings and contemporary literary theory to produce criticism that sketches the scope of Harrison's influence.

Revivi, Menachem; Kopelowitz, Ezra
At a time when Jewish communities have become increasingly anxious about weakening Jewish identity, one response strategy is to engage with the concept of Jewish Peoplehood as a social phenomenon, in its varied contexts and processes. This volume represents the first in-depth effort to address the concept of Jewish peoplehood since the initial attempts of early 20th century Jewish intellectuals, Mordechai Kaplan and Salo Baron. Indeed, its substance goes far beyond the range of a contemporary academic anthology - constituting, rather, a dynamic think tank on the concept of Jewish peoplehood through bringing together intellectuals from France, Israel, the UK, and the United States. This collection offers both intellectual and practical frameworks for grappling with the policy outcomes of different understandings of the peoplehood concept, and contributors to this volume include noted figures from diverse walks of life: academic disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, a rabbi, a literary figure, and communal leaders. 169pp.

Gill, C. S.
This book provides a consolidated, comprehensive and yet accessible list of terms and acronyms that are used regularly in agriculture and with all the associated problems of usage of originally discrete technical terms. The book offers an up-to-date list of terms currently in use in biotechnology, genetic engineering and closely allied fields. It is intended to provide a convenient reference source for researchers, students and technicians. The work has been prepared in response to an expressed need. The terms included have been selected by examination of books, dictionaries, journals and abstracts dealing entirely or in part with culture or allied fields. The work is designed to give readers direct insight into the error sources occurring in their profession, especially those resulting from a poor understanding of the subject matter and the usage of particular terms to designate different concepts in different agriculture and plant engineering. Carefully reviewed for clarity, completeness, and accuracy, the book offers a standard of excellence unmatched by any similar publication. 426pp. N.B. Edges and corners of boards, spine and D/J bumped. Small closed tear to bottom edge of front D/J.

Edited By James, Stanlie m and Busia, Abena P. A.
Theorizing Black Feminisms outlines some of the crucial debates going on within contemporary Black Feminist activity. In so doing it brings together a collection of some of the most exciting work by Black women scholars around. It presents essays across a range of subjects; literature, sociology, history, political science, anthropology, and art, amongst others. And it refuses to be limited by notions of disciplinary boundaries or divisions between theory and practice. Most importantly all the essays celebrate Black women's agency and their pragmatic activism. 300pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Bottom corners slightly creased.
