Edited By Afshar, Haleh and Maynard, Mary
During the past decade, feminism and women's studies have been forced to acknowledge the diversities of women's experiences, as well as the patriarchal oppression that they share. The emphasis on difference has shattered the illusion of homogeneity and sisterhood which previously characterized white, middle class westernized feminist politics and analysis. There is relatively little work which concentrates on the inter-relationships of race and gender in general, and the consequences of racism, for women of different backgrounds, in particular. "The Dynamics of Race and Gender" aims to contribute to the debate and understanding in this area. Emphasis has been given to age, class, disability, race and sexuality. The contributors to this volume are from different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, giving a balanced and broad ranging perspective on this important social question. Organized around three main themes, which are; issues of theory and method, questions of identity, racism and sexism at work, the chapters of this book indicate how the processes of "race" and gender interrelate in highly complex and contradictory ways. Demonstrating the benefits to be gained from analysing the interplay of various axes of differentiation in specific empirical and historical locations, and in doing so, under-scoring the point that diversity among women cannot be seen as a static phenomenon. 263pp. N.B. Shadd, Adrienne
When the Lincoln Alexander Parkway was named, it was a triumph not only for this distinguished Canadian but for all African Canadians. This book looks at the history of blacks in the Ancaster-Burlington-Hamilton area, their long struggle for justice and equality in education and opportunity, and their achievements, presented in a fascinating and meticulously researched historical narrative. Although popular wisdom suggests that blacks first came via the Underground Railroad, the possibility that slaves owned by early settlers were part of the initial community, then known as the 'Head of the Lake', is explored. Adrienne Shadd's original research offers new insights into urban black history, filling in gaps on the background of families and individuals who are very much part of the history of this region, while also exploding stereotypes, such as that of the uneducated, low-income early black Hamiltonian. 374pp.

Papadakos, Sue
Those We Do Not See". It could be just the title of a book. It may strike our curiosity and make us open it and admire beautiful pictures. But it could also be a strong stimulus. Not only of the vision, delighted by staring at the beauty, but of the spirit and soul as well. What is there beyond the visible? What our sight can catch we decided to really look around us? How much beauty is there within our reach, and we just pass by? This book offers exactly this peculiarity: it urges us to see. Through Sue Papadakos' sensitive eye and through her undoubtedly "technical" lens, we are given the chance to make a new start, looking around through different points of view, through different perspectives... It may become the starting point of a really essential and more beautiful life for all of us. Text in English and Greek. N.B.Rear cover of d/j slightly marked.

Edited By Brizga, Sandra and Finlayson, Brian
Only in Australasia can the effect of technological societies on river systems be truly analysed and this unique, accessible book covers key issues in river management from a geomorphological perspective. Australia and New Zealand were colonised only 200 years ago by central bureaucratic administrations. For the whole period of European settlement most river management activities have been carried out by government agencies and the record of their activities is relatively complete. These countries therefore provide good case studies for the impact of technological societies on river systems, having transformed their rivers in a short time from their 'natural' into a heavily managed condition. Geomorphology provides the scientific basis for much of our understanding of river behaviour and geomorphologists are now actively involved in the management process. This book provides a collection of case studies, the first to be produced to date, which describe the management of rivers covering issues of environmental flow, stream condition, mining and extractive activities, river channel change, river stabilisation, river regulation and urban streams. The book will prove invaluable to geomorphologists, river engineers, stream ecologists, river managers, and environmental impact assessors involved in river management and restoration.301pp.
