Edited By Huttl,Reinhard F. And Bellmann,Klaus
This volume summarises the result of an interdisciplinary research programme entitled "Rehabilitation of the Atmosphere of the New States of Germany - Effects on Terrestrial Ecosystems". Before the unification of Germany, emission loads of SO2 and dust particles were up to 18-fold higher in East than in West Germany. However, emission rates have decreased significantly since reunification in 1990, due to the breakdown of a large number of industrial and particularly lignite-fired powerplants and the implementation of clean air technologies. In order to study the effects of these dramatic changes in atmospheric chemistry on terrestrial ecosystems, comprehensive field studies were conducted in pine forest ecosystems along an historic gradient of atmospheric deposition rates in the northeastern lowlands of Germany. The fast and dramatic reduction of dust particle and SO2 emissions offers a unique opportunity to test the role of SO2 and alkaline particle deposition with regard to changes or damage to forest ecosystems and whether the forest stands return to a state of resilience. 324pp.

Beginning with the introduction of the religion into China, this chronicle depicts the evolution of Buddhism. The career and achievements of the great Kumarajiva are investigated, exploring the famed philosophical treatises that form the core of East Asian Buddhist literature. Providing a useful and accessible introduction to the influential Tien-t'ai school of Buddhism in Japan as well as the teachings of the 13th-century monk Nichiren, this examination places special emphasis on the faith of the Lotus Sutra and the major works of masters such as Hui-su, Chih-i, and Chanjan. From the early translations of the Buddhist scriptures to the persecution of the T'ang dynasty, this exploration illuminates the role of Buddhism in Chinese society, and by extension, in humanity in general. 194pp. Slight biro mark to front cover. The immune system has evolved in large part to enable organisms to resist microbial infection. Micro-organisms have long been used as experimental tools by immunologists, and the study of the immune response to viruses and bacteria has contributed much to our understanding of basic immunological mechanisms. There are also important practical and clinical reasons for attempting to understand the immunology of infections. These include the rational design of vaccines, the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, the advent of AIDS, the rise in drug-resistant mycobacterial infections and the recognition of the infectious aetiology of peptic ulcer disease. The contributors to this book are all chosen for their active involvement and expertise in the fields. It bridges the divide between basic immunological research and clinical practice. 245pp.Slight fading to base of spine.
