Ohana, David
In the turbulent period between 1870 and 1930, the contours on modernity were taking shape, especially the connections between technology, politics and aesthetics. The trilogy "The Nihilist Order" traces the genealogy of the nihilist-totalitarian syndrome. "The Futurist Syndrome" deals with three variants of the avant-garde artistic movements of European Futurism, and their fascination with totalitarian regimes. Those movements, represented here by their leaders, are: Italian Futurism and fascism, represented by Marinetti; Russian Cubo-Futurism and bolshevism, represented by Mayakovsky; and English Vorticism and its glorification of Hitler, represented by Wyndham Lewis. The Italian futurist movement typified the double image of modernism. Worshipping the major features of the modern age such as dynamism, speed and industrial and urban aesthetics, they added ideological concepts such as 'heroic technology' and 'mechanised warfare'. The Russian version of Futurism joined hands with local revolutionaries in an attempt to destroy the old world and bring about modernization, yet ironically used irrational religious terminology to explain its purpose.Using nihilistic language, Mayakovsky's revolutionary poetry opposed bourgeois imagery and mythologised the Russian people and Lenin. The third case study, Wyndham Lewis, was a renowned painter, writer, editor and cultural critic. His artistic movement, Vorticism, the English version of futurism, and his glorifying portrayal of the Nazi dictator, "Hitler" (1931), exemplified the two faces of Fascism: aesthetic nihilism within a totalitarian structure. These three examples, while different and tied to their particular nationalities, show that the artistic principles of the futurist syndrome had universal appeal and created a climate of opinion that paved the way for the rise of European totalitarianism. 206pp.

Chronic hepatitis has been the focus of intense scientific research for decades and considerable progress and new insights into its pathogenesis and resulting therapeutic strategies have been made. Replication of hepatitis B and C viruses and details of its life cycle in the host have been well characterized. Immunology in general and immunopathology of the liver in viral and autoimmune hepatitis have shown more specific mechanisms of host defence and new models of autoimmune aggression have been developed. The role of apoptosis in liver damage is now well appreciated and has been analyzed precisely. Essential steps of fibrogenesis as a consequence of chronic liver damage are now better understood and new strategies for its prevention have evolved. Chronic hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cell carcinoma, the molecular basis of which has been more clearly elucidated. This increasing knowledge should provide a sound basis for more effective therapy in chronic hepatitis and its life-threatening consequences. This book, the proceedings of the Falk Workshop on Chronic Hepatitis, held in Cologne, Germany, on January 27-28, 2000, brings together experts from different fields of research such as virology, immunology, pathology, cell and molecular biology, as well as clinical medicine, and discusses in depth the novel findings in basic and clinical research.275pp. N.B.Slight fading to d/j spine.

Gullberg, Anders and Isaksson, Karolina
Traffic congestion in big cities is a growing problem, and in the Swedish capital of Stockholm a seven-month long trial period with congestion taxes was carried out in 2006. It has since been made a permanent system. In this book, the authors scrutinise and analyse the political and administrative processes of the first Swedish congestion experiment and its aftermath. The articles point to the fact that traffic policies are implemented for varying purposes, and differing interests can be premiered when designing congestion systems. The authors' analyses are mirrored against collective, international experiences and research. The authors describe the preoccupations, hopes and impressions that came along with the trial period, and how feelings fluctuated among the inhabitants of Stockholm before, during, and after the trial. The book shows how research can and should follow the general trends in societal developments closely. Flexibility is especially important in order to explain problems, and preventing gossip and preconceived ideas from gaining a foothold. The authors hope to provide tools for avoiding the pitfalls, and that the successes of the Stockholm Trial will be repeated in other contexts. 314pp.
