Starr, Douglas
This work tells the story of a global resource - blood - and exposes the workings of a secretive industry. Its backdrop encompasses the history of the advanced nations, from the first blood experiments during the Enlightenment to the genetic laboratories that may render transfusions obsolete. Geographically, it ranges from German concentration camps to the pharmaceutical companies in Japan that surpass all others in making commerical products from blood. 429pp.

Englert, Klaus
Spanish museum architecture has experienced a marked upturn since the 1990s, fired in part by the worldwide acclaim for Frank O. Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Spanish architects have designed unique museums that have changed the look of whole towns, from Rafael Moneo's Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Merida to the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y Leon in Leon in Castille, built by the Madrid architects Mansilla + Tunon. Moneo, who recently completed the annexe for the Museo del Prado in Madrid, may still be the leading figure in Spanish architecture, but architects like Mansilla and Tunon (who trained under Moneo), are now attracting attention internationally as well as in Spain, as are even younger talents who have just left architecture school. Spanish architects use a wide variety of formal languages, yet there are some characteristics that apply to them all: they are uninterested in Postmodernist games; the modern reinterpretation of regional building traditions is prominent in their practice; they are sensitive to particular features of the environment and topography. Kenneth Frampton observed in this context that Spanish architecture essentially runs counter to the globalisation tendencies that are increasingly reducing architectural form to a comfortable (yet formulaic) aesthetic product. This book, which makes an excellent museum guide, shows that this tendency is particularly conspicuous in the new museums, and confirms the world-class nature of new Spanish architecture. Klaus Englert studied philosophy and German. He was academic adviser to the Zollverein development company in Essen. He has worked for several years as free-lance culture correspondent and architecture critic for the Suddeutsche Zeitung, the Neue Zurcher Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. 199pp.

Edited By Hunt,Richard H. And Tytgat,Guido N.J.
H. pylori infection, both in man and in the laboratory animal, has become a standard model to investigate fundamental problems in biology, such as microbial-host interactions, intracellular signalling, modulation of inflammation, mucosal atrophic metaplasia, and microbial resistance, to name just a few. The issues addressed in this book are grouped according to their leading theme. Topics include: the new Helicobacters, strain differences of H. pylori and their consequence on microbial-host interactions and the effects of H. pylori infection on the gastric mucosa. The role of H. pylori is explained in relation to: gastric carcinogenesis; gastroesophageal reflux disease; dyspepsia and long-term acid suppression. Eradication therapies are reviewed with respect to their global consequences and problems. The last two sections are devoted to a global update on therapeutic indications and finally on priorities for further research. These proceedings accurately reflect the state-of-the-art presentations delivered by world experts. This latest volume will further enrich this top-class series on H. pylori infection. 538pp.

Alikhan, Shahid; Mashelkar, Raghunath
It is common knowledge that intellectual property rights lie at the heart of the global economy. But in what way exactly? The literature in the fields has burgeoned dramatically in recent years, and we have a surfeit of work that either focuses on narrow aspects or sweeps over broad legal regimes from the perspectives of particulars stakeholders. Here for the first time is a panoramic but detailed view of the world's intellectual property system that embraces socioeconomic, cultural and technological development in its scope, clarifying the pitfalls and challenges that the system presents even as it promises to improve the quality of life on our planet. The authors, both internationally respected and honoured for their work in elucidating the economic necessity of an intellectual property system that can inspire universal confidence, emphasise the imperative of international competitiveness in knowledge-based technology.217pp.
