Edited By Afshar, Haleh and Maynard, Mary
During the past decade, feminism and women's studies have been forced to acknowledge the diversities of women's experiences, as well as the patriarchal oppression that they share. The emphasis on difference has shattered the illusion of homogeneity and sisterhood which previously characterized white, middle class westernized feminist politics and analysis. There is relatively little work which concentrates on the inter-relationships of race and gender in general, and the consequences of racism, for women of different backgrounds, in particular. "The Dynamics of Race and Gender" aims to contribute to the debate and understanding in this area. Emphasis has been given to age, class, disability, race and sexuality. The contributors to this volume are from different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, giving a balanced and broad ranging perspective on this important social question. Organized around three main themes, which are; issues of theory and method, questions of identity, racism and sexism at work, the chapters of this book indicate how the processes of "race" and gender interrelate in highly complex and contradictory ways. Demonstrating the benefits to be gained from analysing the interplay of various axes of differentiation in specific empirical and historical locations, and in doing so, under-scoring the point that diversity among women cannot be seen as a static phenomenon. 263pp. N.B. Leiman, Melvin M.
The Political Economy of Racism shows how the persistence of racism can be explained in terms of the changing economic and political needs of different groups of capitalists. Leiman demonstrates clearly how the relative decline in the American economy is clearly linked to the persistence of racism. He argues that capitalists are not a class with a monolithic and unchanging interest in a particular form of racial discrimination and that the character of racism changes with the economic and political needs of different groups of capitalists. The Political Economy of Racism is a controversial book that challenges existing theories of racial discrimination and provides a radical alternative theory. 421pp. N.B. Lee, Eric Yong-Joong
This work examines the national and international legal issues of economic cooperation between North and South Korea under the current divided situation. In the last years of the 20th century and the early part of the 21st, the relationship between the two Koreas has been generating more concern than in earlier times. This new interest has been followed by two epoch-making developments since the early 1990s: the conclusion of the Basic Agreement of 1991 and the Declaration of the North South Summit of 2000. These events have caused remarkable changes in political as well as economic, relations between the north and the south. This book reviews the current legal regime and the setting up of a positive legal framework for inter-Korean economic cooperation, beginning to be regulated by international law at the start of the 21st century. 288pp.
