Muravchik, Joshua
Socialism was man's most ambitious attempt to supplant religion with a doctrine claiming to ground itself in 'science'. Indeed, no religion ever spread so far so fast. Yet while socialism had established itself as a fact of life by the beginning of the 20th century, it did not create societies of abundance or give birth to 'the New Man'. Each failure inspired new searches for the path to the promised land: revolution, communes, social democracy, Communism, Fascism, Third World socialism. None worked, and some exacted staggering human tolls. Then, after two hundred years of wishful thinking and fitful governance, socialism suddenly imploded in a fin du siecle drama of falling walls and collapsing regimes. This book traces this fiery trajectory through sketches of the thinkers and leaders who developed the theory, led it to power, and presided over its collapse. Muravchik's accomplishment in 'Heaven on Earth' is to tell a story filled with character and event while at the same time giving us an epic chronicle of a movement that tried to turn the world upside down -- and for a time succeeded. 417pp.

The hepatocyte adapts its metabolic and excretory function to changes in nutrient supply, xenobiotics, cytokines and hormones, which provides a basis for the role of the liver in the maintenance of the body's homeostasis. Such adaptations of hepatocellular function to the environment require not only structures for recognition of signal molecules and for the sensing of environmental alterations, but also machineries which transfer this information to intracellular effector sites. Considerable progress has been made during recent years with respect to the understanding of membrane-associated receptor systems and the molecular mechanisms by which signals are transduced from these receptors to the effector sites inside the cell, i.e. the nucleus and other organelles, the cytoskeleton and various enzymes. A complex signal transduction network involving a co-ordinated action of a variety of protein kinase and phosphatase cascades has been identified. Such signalling events are not only important for the understanding of the physiological regulation of liver cell function, but also provide new pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects. This text, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop on "Signalling in the Liver" (Part IV of the Liver Week Freiburg 1997) held in Freiburg, Germany, October 6, brings together an international forum of experts in both basic science and clinical applications.Slight fading to base of D/J spine.224PP

Immigrant workers are as crucial to the world and national economies as they are socially and politically controversial. This provocative book explores the rise of the global working class in the 19th & 20th centuries by examining the experiences of a wide range of immigrant workers in the US, Europe, Asia and Africa. Are immigrant workers more conservative or radical than native-born workers? Under what circumstances do workers act together and when do they fail to co-operate? These are just two of the questions addressed in this important collection of essays. 333pp.
