Watson, Tony J.
In the third edition of this successful and popular text, Tony Watson explains how the discipline of sociology can contribute to our wider understanding of the variety of work practices and institutions which exist in modern societies. He travels the full journey from the founding ideas of the discipline to postmodernist departures and develops all the main areas: occupations; organizations; work experience; industrial relations; industrial society and theory. The book ends with a thoroughly revised chapter covering the major questions of how work experience and global patterns of relationships are changing now and may change in the future. Thoroughly revised and presented in a new and accessible format, this third edition of Sociology, Work and Industry will prove an indispensable guide to a massive and complex field. 426pp. N.B. Edited By Qureshi,Asif H.
Economic activity, Professor Qureshi insists, is a visible manifestation of the human condition. Therefore, the laws that regulate it and develop its norms must be deeply human. International economic law must be ever-vigilant in its efforts to represent the economic needs of all strata of humanity - it must not allow the cultural imperatives of any one group to predominate. To investigate the validity of this deeply-held conviction, in May 2001 Professor Qureshi and the University of Manchester School of Law brought together a conference of major IEL scholars to elicit as broad a diversity of perspectives as possible. This book, grew out of that conference, with contributors and other scholars focusing and augmenting their standpoints in essays that crystallize the critical perspectives from which IEL may be viewed. Issues and topics that arise in the course of the investigation include the following: globalization and its institutions; the survival of the nation-state; the role of the International Court of Justice; sustainable development; developing countries and dispute settlement; developing countries and trade negotiations; regional integration; human rights and the "untouchability" of IEL; and the gender bias of basic IEL institutions and rules. There are also clear presentations of specifically Marxist and Islamic perspectives, and an analysis along lines of "fairness" as developed by Thomas Franck and John Rawls. 338pp.

Chernus, Ira
During the Second World War, Dwight D. Eisenhower formulated an ideology that encompassed deeply held ideas about human nature, society, and political life. From the day the war ended, Eisenhower promoted this ideology; he considered the production of words as an end in itself, essential to the real business of governing. During his years as Army Chief of Staff, president of Columbia University, Allied Commander in Europe, and candidate for President of the United States, Eisenhower continuously emphasised the inspirational value of the spoken word. This book reveals how one man helped construct the sense of national and global insecurity that pervaded American life for decades. 366pp.
