This book, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop on 'Topical Steroids in Gastroenterology and Hepatology', held in Berlin, Germany, on 14 June 2003, critically discusses the current role of budesonide in gastroenterology, hepatology, surgery and oncology and focuses especially on potential new indications for the use of budesonide. A number of smaller clinical studies and anecdotal case reports with impressive clinical effects are reported in patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, oncological and surgical problems. In addition, the use of budesonide for the treatment of distal ulcerative colitis and ileocolonic Crohn's disease is evaluated with respect to its role in an evidence-based management of IBD. Finally, as clinical experience with the use of budesonide is increasing, safety issues and the side-effect profile of budesonide is addressed. 127pp.

Edited By Lodberg, Peter
The relationship between religion, politics, and law represents, one of the most important issues in contemporary discussions on the world's future. While global changes and political conflicts in many parts of the world demand serious reflection about the role of religion in politics and in public discourse, the study of religion in post-secular societies calls for reflections about the normative role of religion in politics and law. Through the contributions of scholars in the disciplines of theology, the science of religion, and political science, this volume presents an absorbing analysis of democracy, politics, and law, drawing upon the works of John Rawls, Jfirgen Haberman, Max Horkheimer, Michel Foucault and Theodor W Adorno. Such topics as Islam and democracy are addressed, in addition to the report by the European Council on Fatwa and Research and specific issues in which churches have been involved in political conflicts. Case studies on communism, nazism, and apartheid, for example, are also presented, and finally the question is addressed of how inter-religious dialogue can function in secular societies in relation to the Danish cartoon crisis. 186pp.

Edited By Welsh,Brandon C. And Farrington,David P.
Crime prevention should be rational and should be based on the best possible evidence. Decision-makers should weigh heavily any available evidence on what works best. How can a program that has produced no discernable evidence of effectiveness, as shown through numerous evaluations, be considered for implementation? Unfortunately, this happens all the time. Evidence-based crime prevention attempts to overcome this and other obstacles by ensuring that the best available evidence is considered in any decision to implement a program designed to prevent crime. This book is about evidence-based crime prevention. A project of the Campbell Collaboration Crime and Justice Group, "Preventing Crime" brings together the leading scientific evidence on what works best for a wide range of interventions organized around four important domains in criminology: at-risk children, offenders, victims, and places. It is the first book to assess the effectiveness of criminological interventions using the most rigorous review methodology of the systematic review. It is an indispensable guide to the leading scientific evidence on what works best to prevent crime. 243pp.
