Humphries, Christopher
This is a book that answers all the ancient philosophical questions: about the good, the right, the true, the nature of mind and soul, divinity, immortality, and free will. It does so not by windy argument, but by the discoveries of the forbidden sciences created by Toynbee, William James, C G Jung, Dr Humphrey, and many others. For every question, there is some realm of experience which can provide an answer, using the essence of scientific method: reproducibility and ruling out the alternatives. If you want to know the solution to the classical problem of evil, don't ask a theologian; ask a mystic, one who has experienced cosmic consciousness, and has seen the pattern that runs through all things. These new sciences are forbidden in the universities, but they flourish, nonetheless, including the study of UFOs. Are they real? Why don't they make contact? How is it possible to jump hundreds of light years in an instant? If ETs are at all common, why didn't they colonise the Earth? The answers to these questions provide the unifying theme of this book, our own journey to the stars by levitation and teleportation. We take our first step to those powers by attaining spiritual maturity. We begin our spiritual evolution by learning the answers to the perennial philosophical questions. If it seems impossible to do all this in 280 pages, then read carefully, for Dr H does not waste words or repeat himself. If you think it impossible in any number of pages, read his chapter on 'The Function of Philosophy'. Dr H knows what that is, while those who scoff are often mere sophists or professional sceptics. 280pp.

Adams, John; Peek, George A., Jr. (editor)
A reprint of the 1954 Bobbs-Merrill edition. "The fundamental article of my political creed," declared John Adams, "is that despotism, or unlimited sovereignty, or absolute power is the same in a majority of a popular assembly, an aristocratical council, an oligarchical junto, and a single emperor. Equally arbitrary, cruel, bloody, and in every respect diabolical." The consequences of this article for Adams' thought are nowhere better articulated than in this anthology, which presents his remarkable attempts at constructing a complete political system based on constitutional, balanced, representative government. 223pp.

Cornell, Drucilla
In "Beyond Accommodation", Drucilla Cornell offers a view of what feminist theory can offer contemporary women. She shows how a way to ethical feminism can be found through an alliance with deconstruction. Cornell challenges the essentialist and naturalist accounts of feminine sexuality offered by the feminist legal scholars Catharine MacKinnon and Robin West, and the French feminists Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, and Helene Cixous. She shows that these accounts actually entrap women, curtailing feminine sexual difference, giving credibility to the masculine fantasy of woman and so reinstating the gender hierarchy. To find a way past essentialism, Cornell looks to recent French philosophy and offers an original reading of Derrida, utilizing his challenge to Lacanian theory and his allegory of the feminine to allow for the affirmation of woman. Cornell's work has broad implications for feminist jurisprudence which is concerned with the harms to women that do not "exist" within the current legal system. She offers an impassioned defence of women's rights and a lucid analysis of the dilemmas of postmodern feminism. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of women's studies and continental philosophy. 239pp. N.B. Some underlining throughout. Previous owners inscription to ffep.
