Edited By Brizga, Sandra and Finlayson, Brian
Only in Australasia can the effect of technological societies on river systems be truly analysed and this unique, accessible book covers key issues in river management from a geomorphological perspective. Australia and New Zealand were colonised only 200 years ago by central bureaucratic administrations. For the whole period of European settlement most river management activities have been carried out by government agencies and the record of their activities is relatively complete. These countries therefore provide good case studies for the impact of technological societies on river systems, having transformed their rivers in a short time from their 'natural' into a heavily managed condition. Geomorphology provides the scientific basis for much of our understanding of river behaviour and geomorphologists are now actively involved in the management process. This book provides a collection of case studies, the first to be produced to date, which describe the management of rivers covering issues of environmental flow, stream condition, mining and extractive activities, river channel change, river stabilisation, river regulation and urban streams. The book will prove invaluable to geomorphologists, river engineers, stream ecologists, river managers, and environmental impact assessors involved in river management and restoration.301pp.

Twyman, Michael
In the last few decades lithography has become the major book production process, but its versatility and potential for short-run, "do it yourself" publishing were first exploited early in the 19th century. The arrival of desk top publishing has stimulated an interest in this once neglected, but now very relevant, area of printing history, and Twyman's meticulous research presents the reader with a minute account of the subject. He describes the design and production of a wide range of publications, from a broad variety of sources, for whom lithography promised a flexibility unobtainable from letterpress. However, some of his most interesting accounts and demonstrations are of hopes disappointed and a return to letterpress. This text is a study of the potential of lithography for "do it yourself" publication in the 19th century by the military (manuals), antiquarians (catalogues), by those needing special types (Champollion on hieroglyphs, Pitman on shorthand) and by publishers mixing text with illustration and tables. There were a great variety of users whose output is later mirrored in the "camera ready" books of the 1960s and 1970s. 374pp. N.B. Very very slight fading to top edge of boards and spine.

Candell-Riera, J and Ortega-Alcalde D. (Editors)
This book, which is based on the experience of a single hospital team, encompasses major issues in nuclear cardiology with a clinical orientation. It lays particular emphasis on everyday clinical problems and situations which particularly address technical, physical or experimental advances. There are three parts: the first is a review of technical and procedural issues; in the second the major clinical conditions in which nuclear cardiology techniques have an application are reviewed, with a critical appraisal of their uses; and the third part provides an overview of the statistical and epidemiological fundamentals which are relevant for a proper understanding and evaluation of the results of nuclear studies. The book is addressed to all cardiologists and nuclear medicine specialists. Faint marks to boards but otherwise like new. 401pp.

Cotterell, Arthur
The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in Mesopotamia, then in Asia Minor and Egypt, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In c. 1286 BC at Kadesh in the Eastern Mediterranean - where the troops of Ramesses II overwhelmed the Hittites - 5,000 chariots were deployed. Its use is recounted in Indian epics and Chinese histories. Homer's Iliad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek charioteers. When Alexander the Great descended into the North Indian plain in early 326BC, he found chariots as well as elephants in the armies ranged against him. After its disappearance from the battlefield, chariot racing attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators. The Emperor Nero drove his own ten-horse chariot in the Olympic Games (he fell out but still won the prize). In Constantinople in AD 352 a three-day riot, ignited by a chariot race, left over 30,000 people dead after the Emperor Justinian had to send in troops to restore order. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Ireland, through Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. Illustrated throughout and exploring the chariot's legacy.344pp.
