Edited By Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism, Ankara, Turkey
The topic of suicide terrorism takes us right to the heart of the dilemmas of the 21st century. This type of attack has become the weapon of choice of 'globalized terror'. The scene is set by a historical review of suicide attacks in the first chapter. This wide-ranging analysis divides the phenomenon into three main headings: individual and psychological factors, the organization and its contribution, and the environments in which the terror is nurtured. Other topics covered include: what is new about terrorism, the mindset of the PLL terror organization, reactions of security forces, recruiting and training suicide bombers, the high profile of women suicide bombers, the focus area Iraq, the impact of suicide attacks on US public opinion, the London bombings, the international character of suicide attacks, how the police and/or private security personnel can provide on-site security against suicide terrorism and the financing of terrorism. 185pp.

These books are presented in a slipcase. The text is featured in Hebrew and English. This festschrift is presented as a gift to Professor Michael Rosenak in tribute to his unique and pioneering contribution to Jewish Education in general and to the Philosophy of Jewish Education in particular. The list of contributors to these volumes includes experts in the different disciplines of Jewish Studies, academics that apply the scholarly tools of the Social Sciences to the study of Jewish education, scholars interested in the interdisciplinary aspects of Jewish Studies and their implications for Jewish education, educational leaders and directors of visionary educational institutions. Colleagues, students and friends have all contributed enquiries into the issues that have stood at the centre of Mike's professional concerns. "Languages and Literatures in Jewish Education" thus invites the reader to participate in the ongoing dialogue on the key issues of Jewish existence and education today.

Nissimi, Hilda
This book tells the little-known story of a fascinating crypto-Jewish community through two centuries and three continents. Beginning as a precarious settlement of a few families in mid-eighteenth-century Mashhad, an Islamic holy city in northern Iran, the community grew into a closely-knit group in response to their forced conversion to Islam in 1839. Muslim hostility and a culture of memory sustained by intra-communal marriages reinforced their separate religious identity, vesting it in strong family and communal loyalty. Mashhadi women became the main agents of the cultural transmission of communal identity and achieved social roles and high status uncharacteristic for contemporary Jewish and Muslim communities. The Mashhadis maintained a double identity - upholding Islam in public while tenaciously holding onto their Jewish identity in secret. The exodus from Mashhad after 1946 relocated the communal centre to Tehran, and later to Israel and after the Khomeini revolution to New York. The relationship between the formation and retention of communal identity and memory practices - with interconnected issues of religion and gender - draws upon existing research on other crypto-faith communities, such as the Judeoconversos, the Moriscos, and the French Protestants, who through the special blend of memory-faith and ethnicity emerged strengthened from their underground period. For the immigration period, the author challenges the old paradigm that "modernity and religion are mutually exclusive". The book also explores the sometimes uncomfortable yet intimate relationships that exist between seemingly incompatible ways of seeing the past, both secular and religious.180pp.

Steeves, H.Peter
Phenomenology, in its traditional encounters with ethics, has commonly aimed at a more descriptive rather than prescriptive goal. The direction of this text is both phenomenological and prescriptive as it attempts to provide a phenomenological foundation for communitarian ethical theory. It argues, following Husserl, that the Ego and the Other arise together in sense and we are committed to community in a foundational way. Consequently, we are foundationally imbedded in a deep community and a deep communitarian ethic. 154pp.
