Considerable investment has been made by both pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in pharmaceutical products of biotechnology. However, because relatively few of these products have been marketed, lack of relevant experience means that uncertainty still surrounds the most appropriate strategy for their safety evaluation. The 13th CMR International Workshop, held in February 1997, provided the opportunity for regulatory authority and industry experts from Europe, Japan and the USA to share their experiences of designing safety evaluation programmes for specific product classes: colony stimulating factors, growth factors, hormones, interferons, interleukins, monoclonal antibodies for therapeutic use, and gene therapy products. Participants worked together to recommend those studies that should be considered for such safety evaluation, and those that may be unnecessary. These recommendations subsequently made a valuable contribution to the ICH guideline "Safety Studies for Biotechnological Products", which was finalized at ICH 4 in Brussels in July 1997.200pp.

Kelsohn, Caroline S. (editor)
178pp.Thomas Jefferson once envisioned the United States as a 'nation of yeomen farmers'. Looking around today, however, illustrates that nothing could be further from the truth. In a globalised world and techno-centred society, urban sprawl is overtaking rural America. For over a century, farming was the backbone of the American economy, and though it is still critical to American productivity, many rural areas are plagued by poverty and job reduction. Agricultural issues have a hold over national politics (as in the debates over farm subsidies), but they cannot change several significant trends in America today: the movement toward fewer and larger farms, environmental pressures from urban and suburban interests, and changing food consumption patterns. In order to assist the remaining 'yeomen farmers', a comprehensive and integrated agricultural policy must be initiated to sustain the nation's farming communities. This book analyses the status of the farm industry in rural America, providing a historical context for agriculture and assessing its future for the nation. Rural America and the numberless families it encompasses cannot be neglected, and the information provided in this book is necessary to understanding the nature of what has historically been a key component of American industry and life.

Rogers, Nicola
It is over 35 years since the Association Agreement between Turkey and the EC was signed, and only slow progress has been made towards the accession of Turkey to the Community. However, the benefits of the Agreement in terms of the rights bestowed on Turkish workers in the Community cannot be negated. The Agreement and its subsidiary legislation now provide the most established rights of third country nationals in Community law. This volume provides a reference to the provisions of the EC-Turkey Association Agreement and subsequent Council of Association decisions as they affect migrant workers from Turkey. It also contains an up-to-date analysis of the ECJ rulings in the field. It includes: the relevant texts of the Agreement and the Council of Association decisions; the texts of all the ECJ judgments in the field; snf detailed analysis of the provisions and ECJ judgments. 256pp.
