Logue,Mary
They stand at once as silent reminders of time past as well as the hub of our daily lives. They are the focus of activity in every county - the site of political speeches, holiday parades, and community picnics. They are the courthouses of Minnesota's eighty-seven counties. Writes author Mary Logue, "With a clock tower, the courthouse becomes metaphor, literally the ticking heart at the centre of a county." In this beautiful book are photographs celebrating the variety of Minnesota's county courthouses. From the classic Beaux Arts dome atop the Stearns County Courthouse to the unadorned simplicity of the Sibley County Courthouse, this book offers a parade of some of the finest public buildings in the North Star State. Paired with Doug Ohman's photos is an essay by poet and mystery writer Mary Logue that reveals the secrets of these buildings we thought we knew. Together they tell the story of these distinctly American structures, symbols of the ways Minnesotans live under the law - with justice, equality, and fairness. "Courthouses of Minnesota" is the third book in the "Minnesota Byways" series, a sumptuous photographic survey showcasing the state's classic architectural icons and paired with some of the best writers in the state. 128pp.

Von Moos, Stanislaus
"Designing has less to do with inventing than with recombining stored architectural memories." By saying this, architects Heinz Hilmer and Christoph Sattler are trying to express that they are not inclined to give into the hope that is especially raised in Modernism of being able to invent something really new, but that instead they consciously take their bearings from constantly recurring forms of architecture and urbanism. They neither desire nor aim to design a quite different building or a quite different town, but to develop the building and the city as well as they possibly can from their particular context, literally building on the experience of the past. Another of the two architects' credos is that architecture is an independent discipline with its own laws, and that therefore it should not draw from other areas: "A building is neither a cave nor a tent, neither a tree nor an umbrella, neither a stand nor a machine, neither structure nor construction. A building is a building." Leafing through this book about Hilmer and Sattler's work over the last 25 years - from their first private house, built for philosopher Jurgen Habermas, a reflection on the white, cubic architecture of early Modernism, via the block-edge development in the centre of Karlsruhe and the Gemaldegalerie in the Tiergarten in Berlin down to the urban design for the area around Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, which helped to gain acceptance for the principle of the European city as a living tissue of buildings, streets and squares rather than an ultimately city-hostile agglomeration of high-rise buildings in this part of Berlin - what is conveyed as well as precision of detail, diversity and proportionality is above all the self-confidence of these two architects who are so sure of themselves. 243pp.

Gallagher, Peter
As the ultimate arbiter in the global trade regime, the dispute settlement system of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is a body whose workings should be known to business people and their counsel everywhere. Here is a book - reviewed for accuracy by the WTO but written independently - that provides an uncomplicated but thorough explanation of the system, its purpose, its rules, and the role it plays in the management of the international economy. Peter Gallagher, a former trade negotiator and a specialist in the Uruguay Round agreements, answers such questions as: what sort of disputes does the WTO deal with?; can business or citizens use the WTO dispute system?; is it possible to get a temporary injunction to stop some action?; how much does it cost a to bring a case?; how far can you keep on appealing a decision?; what processes does a Panel follow?; what does the Appellate Body review?; what process does the Appellate Body follow?; how does intervention by other parties affect a dispute? As a handy guide to "bringing a case" before the WTO, or responding to a case already in progress, this easy-to-use book should prove an ideal starting point for lawyers, business people, or government officials confronted with a disputable trade issue. 148pp.

Grant, Carl A.
This is a work specifically written to encourage research into multicultural education and to help researchers work through some of the inherent problems that face schools who have to deal with the challenge of educating numbers of different groups of students in a fair and equitable manner. The first part covers the marginalization of the discourse in multicultural education, dealing with the way in which traditional teaching writing has not acknowledged the validity of multicultural intellectual thought. The second part tackles the conduct of research in multicultural education, highlighting manifestations of inequality between cultural groups and giving guidance on useful research directions. The social impact of multiculturalism in education is covered in Part 3 and incorporates an analysis of state multicultural education programmes. 267pp.
