Bulletin of Comparative Labour Relations 41. The Club of Labour Law Journals held a conference in Brussels in April 2001, under the auspices of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and the Society for Social and International Cooperation. This book is the record of that significant conference. The presentations and discussion proceed along four main avenues: the "battle for the brains", the impact of atypical work arrangements, the concept of employability, and the online rights of workers. Important questions addressed include: do globalization and high technology necessarily go hand in hand?; which skills increase employability?; what are the social factors of employability?; are contingent and partly dependent workers protected in a fair way?; to what degree can the employment contract be stabilized?; how can we tackle the erosion of social security provisions?; to what extent should intra-company electronic resources be regulated?; and what is the relation between employers and illegal immigrants? 260pp.

Russell, Josephine
This book examines moral responsiveness and thinking in a mixed gender class of primary school children, and offers a theoretical perspective on children's ability to think together about morality in a community of enquiry and on related issues of pedagogy. It tracks development in children's moral awareness, looking at gains and losses from middle to late childhood, and focuses on cognitive skills, notions of moral rectitude, and interpersonal relationships and friendship. The study demonstrates how, through participation in a community of enquiry such as 'Thinking Time - Philosophy with Children' (children sit in a circle, engaging in dialogue, with the teacher as facilitator), children become more thoughtful and develop respect and responsiveness as well as other traits of character that are central to democratic citizenship. The author analyses children's thinking in response to a wide range of content, on issues of justice, freedom and responsibility, rights and duties, inclusiveness, and friendship. Gender differences are also examined. With the increasing emphasis on education for citizenship in the school curriculum comes an awareness that 'children's voice' and 'agency' need to be respected and promoted. Social Personal and Health Education, Values Education, and Education for Citizenship are becoming more critical in an environment where there is a sense of crisis and concern about the fabric of democratic society. In presenting a new paradigm - research with rather than on children, entering into their life-world which their teacher shares - the author demonstrates the potential of children to reflect in a concerned way on issues that concern them and society as a whole. 239pp.

Aristotle; Translated By Welldon, J. E. C.
What is the good life? How can we attain true happiness? How are we to understand the concepts of good, bad, right, wrong, virtue, and vice as they intermingle and pervade the human actions that make up society? In one of the earliest and most comprehensive attempts to offer a systematic treatment of ethics and the principles upon which it rests, the Greek philosopher Aristotle seeks to give substance and meaning to human action and to the manner in which we judge our own behaviour and that of others. Here Aristotle not only offers a discussion of morality that later culminated in a full-blown analysis of political life, but he also sets forth principles and advice that served as the touchstone for many subsequent moral philosophies. 358pp. N.B. Bump to base of spine.
