Edited By Touchard,Guy,Hermine,Olivier,Aucouturier,Pierre and Ronco,Pierre
The kidney involvement in monoclonal gammopathies is a fascinating field of research and of great concern to clinical practice. The book is divided into four parts. The first one is devoted to "the culprits" and includes contributions from leading investigators in B-cell proliferations, immunoglobulin synthesis, secretion and structure, light chain uptake and metabolism in the kidney. The second and third parts are devoted to "the victims": the tubule and the glomerulus. New insights into pathophysiology, clinical and histological features, treatment of renal lesions and therapy of B-cell proliferations are reported in myeloma cast nephropathy, Fanconi's syndrome, Randall-type monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition disease and non amyloid organized monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits. In the last part, immunoglobulinic amyloidosis is considered with a round table devoted to stem cell transplantation and new promising therapies in AL amyloidosis. 298pp.

Hauptman, Herbert A.
'Does the scientist's world conform to the real one? Nature usually answers this question with an emphatic 'No!' It has in fact been said that Nature delights in saying 'No' and only with the greatest reluctance condescends to reveal her secrets. For this reason the scientist's life is not an easy one. However, on those rare occasions when his world does conform to the real one, and for this reason does throw light on the world around us, the rewards and the satisfactions are great and more than compensate for the many disappointments' - Herbert A. Hauptman. In this memoir of a long, distinguished career devoted to scientific research, world-renowned mathematician Herbert A. Hauptman recounts both the joys and the disappointments of his lifelong quest to induce nature to 'reveal her secrets'.In 1985, Dr. Hauptman received the greatest honour that any scientist can receive, when the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded him and his colleague, Jerome Karle, the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Drs Hauptman and Karle were recognised 'for their outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures'. This work has proved to be of the greatest importance because it relates molecular structure to biological activity, thus permitting a better understanding of life processes and making possible the development of many new disease-fighting drugs. Dr. Hauptman vividly describes the difficulties of the mathematical work that led up to his discovery as well as his joy when he finally hit upon a method of unravelling the structure of crystals. In addition, he provides a personal account of his background, family, his formative studies in high school and college, and the experiences that motivated him to pursue a life devoted to scientific research. A strong advocate of the naturalistic worldview and a critic of supernaturalism in any form, he reflects on the alleged compatibility of science and religion and emphasises the importance of scientific understanding for contemporary civilisation. Complete with an appendix containing the original monograph (co-authored with Jerome Karle), which became the basis for their Nobel Prize-winning work, this fascinating and moving memoir offers important insights into the nature of scientific research and the value of the scientific outlook on life. 87pp.

Weiss, Friedl; Wooldridge, Frank
Arguably, the most important element in any system of economic integration is the freedom of movement of persons. In this, as in other initiatives, the European Community has taken the lead, and emerging economic unions and common markets elsewhere in the world take full cognizance of the EC's successes and failures as this fundamental right has developed under European law. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of this body of law, encompassing doctrinal basis, institutional framework, legal compliance, judicial development, and derogation on such grounds as security and health. The authors comment extensively on matters including visas, free movement of workers, freedom of establishment for companies, posted workers, harmonization of professional qualifications, European citizenship, freedom to provide and receive services, agreements between the European Community and other states concerning free movement, the rights of third country nationals (especially their position under the EURODAC regulation), and the rights of families and individuals to housing and education. In addition to providing analysis of the relevant provisions of the European Community Treaty as amended by subsequent treaties including the Treaties of Amsterdam and Nice, the book takes considerable account of all relevant secondary legislation and sometimes soft law, for example draft treaties, resolutions, and draft legislation. The authors also consider what obstacles remain to this freedom, and what future developments might take place in this area of Community law.

Donahue, Topher
As new but with slight bump to corner of front board.Take the snowiest mountains in Canada, add two Austrian immigrants, an army of adrenaline-addicted skiers (kings, queens, billionaires, average people and everyday ski bums) and throw a helicopter into the mix for an unforgettable story of mountain adventure. The tale begins when two childhood friends - Hans Gmoser and Leo Grillmair - leave post-war Austria and travel to Canada in search of adventure. They stumble upon employment taking skiers across the vast glaciers and through the thick forests of Western Canada. When skiers start asking the immigrant mountaineers if it would be possible to use a helicopter to reach the best high-altitude powder, the two find themselves catapulted into a project brimming with more adventure, success, tragedy and fame than they could have dreamed.Complete with archival and contemporary photos, this is the inside story of the people, thrills, accidents and innovations behind the evolution of a sport from a dangerous, ramshackle and lawless enterprise into a multi-million dollar industry offering reliable access to one of the world's most exciting forms of recreation. 293pp.
