Rosenblatt, Jeremy
This text provides a commentary on all international Conventions that bear directly on the rights of the child. The legal issues covered include the child and immigration, intercountry adoption, international child abduction, human rights, armed conflict, and maintenance moneys. It is the first book ever to bring together Conventions that can be realistically relied upon in domestic courts, helping practitioners to avoid the pitfall of being deemed academic or distant from legal realities. Drawing on his extensive in-court experience, Jeremy Rosenblatt shows exactly how each Convention may be used to remind courts and judges of their obligations of an international nature, whether or not such Conventions have been incorporated into the domestic system. Among the Conventions presented and discussed, insofar as they bear on children's rights, are the Dublin Convention, the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption 1993, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Brussels and Lugano Conventions. The author shows how to ensure uniform processes for the protection of the rights of the child everywhere by invoking respective and uniform Conventions that are directly applicable in individual jurisdictions as a result of legal systems globally owning competence and legal comity with one another.288pp.

Singer, Linda
The emergence of AIDS in contemporary culture has not only produced a vast discourse on the disease but has provoked an anxious proliferation of sites of erotic danger. In Erotic Welfare , Linda Singer argues that we are currently living in an "age of epidemic", fueled by a "panic logic" in which contemporary discourse on sexuality and on a variety of social problems - teenage pregnancy, prostitution, and drug addiction, have come to replicate the discourse of contagion. Singer traces the effects of epidemic on the growth of regulatory mechanisms for the control of sexuality, and explores the ways this development has affected women's efforts to secure reproductive freedom; the construction of femininity within the media; and efforts to displace the hegemony of the nuclear family in the cultural imaginary. Her work forms a trenchant critique of sexuality in an age of discipline, where bodies and their pleasures have become dense sites of regulatory power. 210pp. N.B. Edited By Minnen, Cornelius A. Van and Hilton, Sylvia L.
The authors of the essays in this book amass considerable historical evidence illustrating various forms of political repression and its relationship with democracy in the United States, from the late-eighteenth century to the present. They discuss efforts, made mostly but not only by government agencies, to control actions and expressions of dissent, criticism, unpalatable truths, political opposition, or, indeed, any kind of opinions that threatened or inconvenienced powerful and privileged groups in the United States. The authors examine the justifications and multiple means of political repression, and identify individuals and social groups that have been victims of repressive attitudes and policies, because of their political ideology or opinions, or because they represented diverse racial, ethnic and religious minorities. This volume, then, is a contribution to the discussion about the paradox of the historical and ongoing existence of political repression in the United States, within a democracy which theoretically guarantees individual rights and freedoms based on equality under the law. 242pp. N.B. Cunningham, Rosemary
Those who think arts and culture in British Columbia is a recent development might be surprised to learn that opera has been flourishing in the province for well over a hundred years. The first full performance in Victoria took place in 1877 and in Vancouver in 1891. This first-ever history of opera in BC celebrates important milestones for BC's two major companies: Vancouver Opera's 50th anniversary, with the 30th anniversary of Pacific Opera Victoria following in 2010. It also marks the recent upsurge in the popularity of the venerable art form, with new opera groups and simul-cast venues proliferating across the province. Illustrated with over 100 exquisite photographs and rare archival images, "Bravo!" traces the history of opera in the province from its colourful origins in touring companies, to the determined efforts of BC's opera pioneers who laid the foundations for two of Canada's most renowned opera companies, culminating with in-depth reporting on recent developments at Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria. Special features include behind-the-scenes accounts of contemporary productions, full listings of Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria and Modern Baroque Opera productions and detailed information on BC opera singers, composers and opera training in the province. 208pp.
