Kincheloe, Joe L. And Steinberg, Shirley
This work makes accessible and practicable some of the best theoretical innovation in critical pedagogy of the last decade. Issues of knowledge are explored as the authors consider how an integration of popular culture and cultural studies into the lesson plan can enrich and re-invigorate the learning experience. These essays, ranging widely in topic and educational level, are based in theory but are practice-oriented. In translating this theory, the contributors provide educators with techniques which will inform rather than oppress classroom skills. 274pp.

Hughes, Judith M.
The science of mind has been plagued by intractable philosophical puzzles, chief among them the distortions of memory and the relation between mind and body. Sigmund Freud's clinical practice forced him to grapple with these problems, and out of that struggle psychoanalysis emerged. "From Freud's Consulting Room" charts the development of his ideas through his clinical work, the successes and failures of his most dramatic and significant case histories, and the creation of a discipline recognizably distinct from its neighbours. In Freud's encounters with hysterical patients, the mind-body problem could not be set aside. Through the case of Anna O., Emmy von N., Elisabeth von R., Dora, and Little Hans, he rethought that problem, as Hughes demonstrates, in terms of psychosexuality. When he tried to sort out the value of memories, with Dora and Little Hans as well as with the Rat Man and the Wolf Man, Freud reintroduced psychosexuality and elaborated the Oedipus complex. Hughes also traces the evolution of Freud's conception of the analytic situation and of the centrality of transference, again through the clinical material, including the case of Freud himself, who at one point figured as his own "chief patient". Moving from case to case, Hughes has coaxed them into telling a coherent story. Her text leads the reader to see the origins and development of psychoanalysis from a new perspective.Previous owner's signature on ffep.235pp.

Meerhaeghe, M.A.G.Van
The growing influence of the major international economic organizations on members and non-members alike makes it imperative that the rules and functions of these organizations be fully understood. This work is designed to meet the need for a late 1990s concise treatment of significant international economic institutions and agreements. The first part of the book is devoted to world organizations or conventions: the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank Group, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The second part covers regional organizations: the early experiments in European integration, the European Community, and the North American Free-Trade Agreement. In this book Professor van Meerhaeghe also provides a critical comment on the activities of these institutions. For example, he casts doubt on the usefulness of several institutions and questions the craving for power of the European Commission. This seventh edition of the text been extensively revised and brought up to date. The former long chapter on the Economic Community has been split up into three chapters on customs union, economic union and monetary union respectively. A chapter on NAFTA has been added. Due to their reduced (Benelux, EFTA) or only historical (Comecon) significance, the core only of these former chapters has been kept. 368pp.N.B.Slight marking to base of spine.

"Water in the Middle East" presents historical and cross-cultural perspectives on water and conflict, prospects for future cooperation in the water arena among Middle Eastern countries, the political economy of water and technical solutions to water shortages in the Jordan Valley, and the relationships among water, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Through case studies and essays, natural and social scientific water experts from Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and the United States examine: The role of water in Middle East conflicts and the possibility of regional solutions to water scarcity requiring cooperation among states; Long-term prospects of various aquifers and other fresh-water sources, including desalination; current and future environmental deterioration of water resources; Breakthroughs and developments increasing regional agricultural productivity, depending less on high-quality waters while turning to lower quality resources, such as recycled and brackish waters; alternatives to current water-usage patterns, particularly with regard to agriculture and the possibility of redirecting water to tourism and other economic sectors. While this book highlights the complexities pertaining to regional water scarcity and inequitable distribution, the contributors offer no definitive conclusions or facile solutions; yet there is a broad consensus that regional solutions to maximize water resources must be pursued even as desalination becomes more viable both from technical/economic standpoints. The continuing deterioration of existing water supplies in terms of quantity and quality mandate that any solution must be achieved within a political/social framework of peace, enlightened economic policies, and the application of technical solutions that take due account of environmental concerns.249pp.

Edited By Lahteenmaki,Maria & Snellman,Hanna
The West has always been a resource for the Finns. Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant labourers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don't have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West. The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. Karelian evacuees headed west, as did young people from the Finnish countryside when opportunities to make a living in agriculture and forestry diminished in the post-war era. The legacy of these migrants is still visible in the suburbs of Finnish cities today. This book is a joint effort of the Department of Ethnology and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki. It was written by Ph. D. students supervised by Academy Research Fellows Maria Lahteenmaki and Hanna Snellman, in collaboration with colleagues abroad interested in current research in ethnology and history. 247pp.N.B.Two corners slightly bumped.
