Edited By Eekhout, Mick and Tomiyama
The mission of the publication "Delft Science in Design 2" is to promote and advance the exchange of lessons learned on design between university and industry. Also, it aims to amplify the visibility of the results of academic effort in design at Delft University. The questions 'What is design?', 'What is engineering?', 'What is science?' can be fiercely debated. Between the extremes of artistic design and pure science, the transitions are like in fluid: they are smooth and gradual. An approach focusing on how the university deals with knowledge may provide a better entry to the debate. The mutual understanding between scientists from different disciplines may get lost. It is one of the two major objectives of the Delft Science in Design congress to offer a kaleidoscope of the activities of the various faculties to all university colleagues and students, so that staff and students can be made aware of activities in other laboratories, and have the opportunity to be informed on details. Being informed is the first step to understanding. 286pp.

Social Postmodernism defends a postmodern perspective anchored in the politics of the new social movements. The volume preserves the focus on the politics of the body, race, gender, and sexuality as elaborated in postmodern approaches. But these essays push postmodern analysis in a particular direction: toward a social postmodernism which integrates the micro-social concerns of the new social movements with an institutional and cultural analysis in the service of a transformative political vision. 397pp. N.B. This is a classic book on First Nations art and culture is back in print. "The Legacy" is so much more than an elegant art book. It is a delightful and informative guide to the continuing First Nations artistic traditions. A spectacular selection of colour photographs displays the work of 40 artists, and the authors present a detailed analysis of the culture that inspired their work. The authors also discuss the social function of the artists' work, and the different styles, techniques and materials used to create them. The book is based on an exhibition of the same name that travelled throughout BC and Canada and to the United Kingdom in the 1970s and early 1980s. The exhibition helped bring world-wide attention to Northwest Coast First Nations art. The first edition of the book was published in 1980, and in its Foreword, R Yorke Edwards, then Director of the BC Provincial Museum, says: '"The Legacy" has refused to stay on our store-room shelves. This book will ensure that it remains accessible in printed form to a wide audience for many years'. Prophetic words - for this book has been reprinted a dozen times and sold over 25,000 copies. "The Legacy" has become an enduring tribute to the continuing tradition of Northwest Coast First Nations art, and remains an important guide for scholars and art lovers. This new edition includes updates to the artists' biographies and First Nations' names. N.B Very slight mark to front cover. Base of spine slightly rubbed.193pp.

Portugali, Nili
In this book Nili Portugali, presents her particular interpretation of the holistic-phenomenological worldview in theory and in practice, a worldview which stands in recent years at the forefront of the scientific discourse, and is tightly related to Buddhist philosophy. The purpose of architecture is first and foremost to create a human environment for human beings. The real challenge of current architectural practice is to make the best use of the potential inherent in our modern technological age. Yet, modern society has lost the value of man and thus created a feeling of alienation between man and the environment. Contemporary architecture sought to dissociate itself from the world of emotions and connect the design process to the world of ideas, thus creating a rational relation between building and man, devoid of any emotion. Portugali argues that in order to change the feeling of the environment and create places and buildings we really feel 'at home' and want to live in, what is needed is not a change of style or fashion, but a transformation of the mechanistic worldview underlying current thought and approaches. Based on Christopher Alexander's basic assumption that behind human architecture there are universal and eternal codes common to us all as human beings, and that there is absolute truth underlying beauty and comfort, Portugali demonstrates how this approach, as well as her unique planning process stemming from it (based on the way things actually exist already on site) generates that common spiritual experience people undergo in buildings endowed with soul, no matter where or from what culture they come from. That she demonstrates through a variety of her buildings and projects (with over 600 color illustrations and drawings), in relation to the physical, cultural and social reality of the place they were planned and built on, an Israeli reality which reflects a unique interface between the orient and the west, a cultural interface she personally represents.245pp.
